Because it was so prominent, the show runners worked the shoulder tattoo one into the plot, because it would be difficult to cover with makeup due to sweat and rain throughout the show. The 5 represents the TV show that gave him his career, “Party of Five”. The four symbols underneath, in order, roughly translate to; 1. Eagle or Hawk 2. strike, beat attack 3. long 4. sky. When combined it represents the phrase “Eagles strike the wide sky” — referring to a poem by Mao Tse-t’ung, but Fox has never confirmed this.” The meaning of the “B” and “C” unknown. He has two additional tattoos at the time off filming LOST, you can get a glimpse of them a few times. The other is on his left forearm and there is a small one on his back. (If you look up current pics of him he has added many more and has a full sleeve on one arm and half on another.)
