Ok, had an aha moment listening to this, though what I’m about to share is pure speculation: I’ve always wondered how The Great War seems like such a Joe song and yet also has lyrics that fit in so well with the theory that Taylor was going to come out during the Lover era and then called off the plan. But the line that always flummoxed me was “that was the night I thought I lost you.” It makes sense for fans but it didn’t make sense for Joe until the theories that they’ve been shakier than they’ve ever let on. But your point about likely needing Joe (or any boyfriend) for a coming out plan makes me wonder if one of their break ups or low moments is why she didn’t come up. It still makes more sense that Scooter’s purchase of her master’s in June 2019 is the bigger reason, and she did announce the re-record plan in August 2019.
