When I first printed Knight of Alanoc, some of the reviewers laughed at this scene. The expressions were too comical to them, Osric was 'just being a crybaby', and his actions were theatrical and overblown to them. I made the book twice as big to focus on showing the trauma as well as the long but necessary recovery, that Osric isn't just being moody, and people who have gone through trauma all act different. Especially when faced with a 'strange' situation like this (a positive, trustworthy stranger) that they're not used to, which is the point of this story.

Osric does make faces through the course of the story and it's funny when the scene calls for it. This scene though, reads as genuine to me and the only part that's super funny to me is Xerxes's casually violent suggestion that he would love to make swords with him from the iron in their enemies blood and that Osric is genuinely touched by it! lol.

I'm neurodivergent and I generally like to mean what I say with no irony, so maybe this is one of those things where depending on the kind of person you are is how ironic any of these emotions seem, idk lol.
