Bonus Video: Rock Operas & Concept Albums

Hey everyone!
Sorry this was a day late, February really is SHORT and this one got away from me. Plus I had a lot I wanted to cover in this video! Rock operas turned out to be a fairly meaty topic.
Hope you enjoy it and let me know your thoughts in the Patreon comments.

Bonus Video: Rock Operas & Concept Albums

Comments

I’d love to know your thoughts on Lou Reed’s Berlin. I’d say that’s really a Rock opera rather than a concept album and personally I love it it’s my favourite Lou Reed album (including VU) but based on your thoughts on the Tommy / The Wall I’d imagine it might not be your cup of tea.

Luke Hall

The world needs a great rock opera about humanity being replace by AI. If we wait too long, The Velvet Sundown will make it for us. Anyway, I saw The Australian Pink Floyd twice about 10 years ago, and they were incredible. Also, it's a real treat because the emphasis is on the music, screen films, lasers, and inflatable props. So, they don't try to look like the members.

“Bar Paul McCartney releasing an album or god forbid someone like Brian Wilson dying” 😢

These are three of my favorite albums of all time but The Wall is by far my favorite album. I found it at a time in my life that It spoke to me and the music on this album automatically puts me in a better mood. I will also shout out the fact that Les Mis started off as a 1980’s french rock opera / concept album and it’s pretty good IMO

Great video!

this is quite an obvious pick, but my favorite rock opera is definitely the black parade by my chemical romance. the story manifests itself so wonderfully throughout the album and the story is obvious enough to follow and understand, but still leaves a lot up for interpretation. i am a bit biased since mcr is one of my favorites, but the black parade is genuinely amazing and deserves allll the hype. it does make me sad that there’s no film or stage version, but in all honesty, the album doesn’t need it.

I gotta say I think American idiot sounds better live Also the musical is real doofy

Jenny Maurer

I know but I only have so much time to make these and the prompt was for Tommy/The Wall/ and American Idiot

Thanks as always for the thoughtful, interesting video. It uh, seems to me a strange thing mystifying that JCS got only a passing mention!

Allan Massie

That’s a great call! Go to School is a fantastic rock opera and would be great if it were developed beyond the album.

Elliot Roberts

Just wanted to shout out Go To School as it might be my favorite Lemon Twigs album. It's a fantastic rock opera about a monkey raised as a human boy, featuring Todd Rundgren as his adoptive father. There are some music videos, but outside of that, I know the boys tend to move on to their next projects wholeheartedly, so I don't imagine it being revisited/adapted in any way. It would be amazing as a musical, though!

Amanda Hugginkiss

the mountain goats' "Jenny of Thebes" is a more recent rock opera I like that builds off of their characters from previous albums-- i think the rock opera format works really well for a band like theirs that has a ton of material and a kind of "lore" that strings their works together

Rhim Andemichael

Not sure if this fits, but Quadrophenia by The Who is also a rock opera, and was adapted into a film. Not in the way that Tommy was, either. This is a proper film based on the storyline of the album, and using music from said album. If you've not already seen it, check it out.

It will be a day when Elliot does a redux video on his Paul McCartney’s albums video

A David Leaf interview would be so amazing omg

"Are you guys ok" is a hard question to ask Post-War Britain.lol

Aaron Weiss

Dude, American Idiot is like a Top 3 album for me. Getting to see you tall about it was quite a treat. Also, did you know Green Day performed with Ringo once? Did you guess this just me asking about when we're gonna get the Ringo ranking? (Jk, take your time man. Beatles Solo album rankings are art.)

Jacob Schaller

This is great! Thanks for including SF Sorrow. I always considered Rice&Weber's JC Superstar to be an excellent example as well.

Mike Griffith

Tommy is basically the unfinished version of Quadrophenia. The story on Quadrophenia is more grounded and thought out, and the songs are just better in general. The Who are also at their peak musically, especially Keith and Entwhistle who’s playing becomes impossible on this album.
