The Neverending Story Review

I honestly forgot the Oracle Sphinxes want to kill Atreyu... seems really weird and clashes with what we know. Also, was cheap that the third door was left out and we just get the same Sphinxes in blue now. Btw, fun fact, in the awesome ARPG Grim Dawn, there is a portal that just just like the Southern Oracle. :D

As a kid I remember disliking the whole transition where Falkor just appears out of nowhere to save Atreyu. In the book there was a great scene where Atreyu encounters him as prey to Igramul, the Many - a giant shapeshifting swarm of insects that takes many forms - and how Igramul acknowledges the symbol and is willing to help him, but will not let his prey go. And that Atreyu accepts being bitten by him because his poison does let people teleport over great distances, but is also deadly. The same revelation also lets Falkor escape. This explains why Falkor is grateful and will come to his aid later.

Artax's death in the books is even more sad because the horse can talk there and tells Atreyu that he is too sad and despairing to go on as he drowns...

In the books, the Empress' chancellor was also black, but he was also a zebra-centaur. Pity they did not have the budget for that.

Btw reading up on the book again reminded me that... this thing exists: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_from_the_Neverending_Story?useskin=vector It is justfully forgotten in the annals of history.

The movie is good, if you have never read the book. If you have, it is just average. I am still hoping for a more Michael Ende -accurate adaptation, especially for the second part of the book. Ironically, the cartoon was a lot more accurate with its plot here and there than the movies. I do know that I never cared for Falkor being a big shaggy dog instead of a chinese Dragon, or Atreyu not being green-skinned, but the larger problem was the ending which was just nonsense - they definitely wanted to tie in the fantasy land to Bastian's story but that was unneccesary, Also the nature of the Nothing was supposed to be outlined more as a lack of fantasy and innovation and why it was far more horrifying than a giant Werewolf. Btw as for Teeny-Weeny and his super fast snail, yeah that is what he is called in the book too (and the cartoon) - his people are super small, Pixie-sized, so a lot smaller than in the movie.

Very nice to see you again 😀

Since it sounds like Bob is gonna have to give his own ideas on how to fix the sequels when he reviews them, this makes me wonder if he's read the original book the film is based on. From what I've heard, the second film botched a lot of the second half of the book tried to do, so maybe it could be a good source of inspiration.
