After 4 thrash albums and then the departure to the black album and all the criticism that came with it; this just feels like a song that James wanted to make about being a gearhead…
Maybe the execution seems forced but what else can he do?
He’s richer than he ever imagined being at this point and he’s singing about something he’s truly passionate about.
You can’t write a ballad about mechanical muscle…
I hated the load/load 2 era initially but now I really like most songs on both of those albums.

This was them, especially James, feeling himself. It was less trying to recapture past glory and more getting to the top and getting cocky. They were rich by this point and adapting to it kinda weird. Kirk was collecting weird art (the cover of Load is blood and cum pressed between glass, and Reload is blood and piss, if I remember correctly) and they all cut their hair and started dressing like U2 (James said this at some point, in an interview). They're fun albums for what they are, but more as an entirely separate thing. Comparing them to any of their previous work, they don't even come close. But as a bizarre snapshot in time, of guys whose lives had drastically changed in the handful of years prior, they can be fun.
Fuel is kinda fun, but definitely dumb, but there are definitely a few stone-cold classics in those albums, even if they're all over the place and there are a few duds in there. The overproduction and cockiness can absolutely be off-putting, though.
