"End of June" Loose Ends Reader Mail

Well would you look at that June...and most of July...are already over!  It's more than time for a Loose Ends.  In the past 4 weeks we have seen:

So write-in below to ask Tom about these things, and whatever else you want, during the live show!  You have at least ~20 hours (Till 7/19 Afternoon US Central Time) to submit.  There's a chance Tom will do this either on 7/19...or on 7/21 if something he is working on is ready sooner than expected...

Is Navi 32 going to be any good?

qhfreddy

How long ago did plans for RPL-R materialise? Did it stem from not being able to incorporate all the features they wanted in the first spin?

qhfreddy

Has "eSports" become the new marketing excuse for making GPUs that don't have enough VRAM and are incapable of running above 1080p?

qhfreddy

What will you be looking for when meteor lake reviews come out? I don't have very high hopes for alchemist+ for obvious reasons. But if I remember correctly, meteor lake is the first design to come out from the royal core project. So I feel like this is a make or break moment for if Intel's CPU design division has any real hope moving forward

Hey Tom, Now that we've seen how underwhelming this RDNA 3 generation is compared to last gen, and based on how poorly the soon to be released 7700/7800 cards will be, do you have any better info on when RDNA 4 will arrive? More specifically, do you think they will accelerate how fast they release R4, if they know RDNA3 had problems which would likely lead to fewer cards produced to avoid another over stock situation?

Clint Hoffman

Howdy Tom, How long until the intermediate capacity GDDR chips come around to solve the age old problem of the memory bus width / desired capacity problem?

TMCPayton

Regarding mergers and acquisitions, in your opinion, how much merit do you put to the argument that by buying a company , that company could be enabled to improve. For example, could Nvidia holding Arm allow Arm to make better architectures and become more competitive? Could Microsoft holding Activision enable those companies to make better products that wouldn't otherwise be possible?

TMCPayton

Bus width and PCIe lanes are probably more relevant to board cost (fewer traces and cross-talk issues) than die cost, but the same question still applies at that level.

Lo_Res_Gamer

With Nvidia's AD106 skimping on bus width, & AMD's Navi 24 skimping on PCIe lanes, encoders, display outputs, how much die area is really saved by cutting out these features? It sounds like a savings of $1 in silicon for completely nurfing a product.

TMCPayton

In the most recent episode of Broken Silicon there was some discussion about the entry cost of modern desktop PCs. Do you see NUCs filling in a gap? Are you at all worried about NUCs potentially eating away at the bottom end of the DIY market longer term or do you think this would help expand the overall market?

Chris Rijk

Hi Tom, got any interesting anecdotes or data about sales, either regionally or globally? For example, are laptops above $1200 still selling terribly? (Something I seem to remember you saying early in the year)

Chris Rijk

Hey Tom, with all the talk about GPU memory, when do you think we'll be able to freely allocate system memory to iGPUs? Example: AMDs Phoenix APU currently uses but 4GB, even though they could, in theory, make use of as much as there's available. Or am I wrong here and there are hard caps like 8GB or 25% of total memory etc? Grettings from Germany, take care und hau rein!

Dave Scholze

Hey Tom, Why are Intel supposedly using TSMC N3 for Arrow lake instead of their own node? That seems like a huge blow to morale.

otiv lcurtš

Tom like every technology and technology company as it has been said every dog has its day. This A I boom, what do you think about it? When will it burst, like Cisco networking technology 🤔?

Hello Tom, Happy XTX owner here. With Starfield reportedly not having DLSS because AMD with the massive 18% marketshare on PC is using such market dominating leverage to block it. If true (lol) are people only mad it’s AMD doing it and not Nvidia? I can’t recall such outrage to metro exodus enhanced edition for example. To me it seems it’s a problem because AMD’s tech was favored this one time.

Sad XTX 999

Written on my phone so sorry if there is terrible grammar. You recently talked about the 8000G desktop APUs. Do you have a timeline for when the 7000G series might come out? Thank you for all your continued great work.

Jon

Hi Tom, do you have some historical context for how badly ada is selling now that we've presumably seen the whole stack? How bad is it compared to Turing? Is Nvidia starting to rethink trading volume for margin in the consumer space?

Hey Tom AMD Advantage has partnered with Framework to put a 7700S on the Framework 16 as a removable GPU. it Also has a unique design were it sits external to the main chassis, so it can be extended past the back of the laptop. The cooling system is part of the GPU module, not the laptop chassis, so it can be upgraded as well. As far as I know, an upgradable laptop GPU has never been directly supported by the GPU manufacturer. With their support, do you think this will finally make this dream of upgradable gaming laptop a reality?

Hello Tom, BretSummers reporting in. This is a bit different than the topics outlined above but....can you put this in perspective for me? Arrow Lake-S performance over Raptor Lake-S does not seem that impressive! I am looking at Igor's Lab leak for this info (https://videocardz.com/newz/intel-arrow-lake-s-to-be-6-to-21-faster-than-raptor-lake-s-xe-lpg-graphics-show-up-to-2-4x-improvement). This seems to me like Zen 5 will dominate it (while probably using less power as well) or am I missing something? Will they only claim a win in extremely threaded applications with this? I understand it's quite far away so there is no way to be 100% certain but help me understand my guy. iGPU looks promising...if it works.

Why doesn’t Intel open source its drivers for windows. They are getting so much grief. Why not let us help. We all want another big player in graphics. Come on Pat. Let us save you!

Bryan P.

Hi Tom, have you had a chance to test out, or have you heard any good updates on AMD ROCm recently?

Mark Smith

Hey Tom, given the repeated NVIDIA GPU flops this generation, do you think AMD will take market share?

PCDog

Why is hardware unboxed ignoring me informing them that the 4060ti with DLSS3 is an perfect entry level 1080p500hz GPU?

I'd love to have y'all comment on the rather high end CPU requirements for the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion (recommending a 12700k, 12900k for raytracing). Do you think this sort of thing may become more common as game companies pivot to supporting only next-gen hardware? Consoles have 8 cores a at least 4Ghz, combined with the asset/compression co-processors do you think we'll see some pretty high CPU requirements recommended in the next few years? This seems like it could be an issue, considering most gamers only have 6 cores (or even 4) and DirectStorage still isn't implemented in very many games. It feels like PCs are in a bit of a disadvantage on the CPU front, at least on the mid/low end. (full requirements here for reference: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/433980647711834113/1117812382580875264/16_9_EN_1.jpg )

Hey Tom, tried to get this question in the VR episode with Bradley but I guess it didn't fit there so asking here. So Intel has officially announced that its going to open up it's Fabs and split them off for use by fabless companies, and force its design team to operate independently of its manufacturing. You've predicted this for awhile and now it's happening. What does this mean for Intel going forward against AMD? Will we see Zen 7 on Intel fabs, will we see NVIDIA AI or Apple tech spinning out of Intel? What does it mean as I feel this shakes up the entire tech market? Btw, happy patreon subscriber (insert patreon promotion here) and thanks for all you do. I've learned alot from you and appreciate the knowledge you've given me over the years sir!

Earnings calls are coming soon. My bet is Nvidia will see them smashing earnings predictions and give out favorable prospects for Q3. All with a nice bow tie on top with another 20-25% injection on their stock valuation. Got to give credit where credit is due, looking at the big 3, Nvidia, intel and AMD, Nvidia is financially in the black on all fronts. intel just looks financially ruined on paper (PE ratio isn’t even listed bc it’s so bad), AMD is definitely hanging in there, but seem like Jensen Huang knew where to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to tackling a bear consumer market and making it BIG on HPC. MI300 is coming for sure. I’m excited that AMD will enter this space now, also pleasing investors that they are expanding their product portfolio to cover the enterprise and corporate sector that have customers ready to just fork over the cash!
