Hey everyone and happy New Release Monday! Today, I am excited release my first map in my Vallaki-inspired series to create a full set of re-worked maps that showcase this iconic city in CoS!
The Gothic City Gates shows the outer defenses of the largest village in the mist-covered land as well as a handful of homes to greet your party as they enter the city.
"All Will Be Well" can be heard shouted at you from the guards as your party passes through the wooden palisade gates adorned with black-furred wolf heads skewered on stakes!
Inspired by the Gates of Vallaki (Though no gate in particular), this can be used for any of the main gates in Vallaki or used as a gates map in your own campaigns.
The lower half is a heavily wooded area as stakes adorn the road and outer gate. Torches and the armored helmets of guards can be seen between the pointed wooden stakes as they patrol the ramparts of these rustic defenses.
My goal with this map was to give a greater sense of depth and height to show the size of the buildings that make up this city. I wanted to find a balance between rustic and large cities, and these homes are a little nicer than the ones you might find in the Village of Barovia. As the fog presses up against the wooden palisade wall, the town seems to be a safe haven for your party... at least for now!
You will also find small posters around time advertising the upcoming festival adorned with a blazing sun!
Additionally, I will be taking a slightly different approach for the house interiors as creating interiors on a map of this scale is quite a time-intensive project. My goal will be to create a series of house interior maps to be used for any of the houses you'd like. I plan to create a range of these independent maps you can swap out when your players enter any of these homes (including one I plan to make, which can act as a player Bastion!)
Lastly, I wanted to use more red on the roofs here to create a sense of difference from other towns/villages like Krezk or VoB (as well as slightly alluding to a more sinister nature in town!)
For my Champion Tier patrons, you get the following in this release:
Six Color Moods: Dark Fairytale, Ghostly, Gloom, Night, Sunny Day, & Warm
Weather Variants including: Fog, Rain, & Sun Rays
No Lights / Roof Smoke Version
8k & 4k Image Resolution
Jpg & Webp File Types
Grid & NoGrid
I very much hope you are enjoying my new approach to city maps as I attempt to find the perfect balance of token area and perspective. I feel being able to show the building facades and different angles really adds a sense of height and depth to the map making your players feel like they are in a sprawling city with towering homes flanking the roads as they walk through the muddy cobblestone streets!
Coming up next, I'll be working on the Town Square map for the Village of Barovia for the second half of the DragnaCarta Siege of Barovia encounter. Given its location, this map will be in a similar style but with more mud and run-down buildings. I'll post up a sneak peek shot this Thursday so keep an eye on this space!
Thanks for your continued support of my craft, and I wish you all a great December and the last month of the year.
Cheers,
DM Andy
