Welcome to the Dragon Cave, y'all
Added 2022-03-02 03:34:30 +0000 UTCAfter months and months of deliberation and brainstorming (but mostly dragging my feet about it), I have finally launched a Patreon for my future art! I'm extremely grateful to everyone who has already subscribed and will be doing so in the future. In this first post, I'd like to give a breakdown of how I plan to be using this space for the first few months, and what might come in the future.
If you're like me, and long posts with lots of text are hard to focus on, I bolded the most important bits to skim through. And as one major note to add before getting into the details of service, keep in mind that the majority of art posted to this space with be NSFW. While I will be posting SFW art content as well, this space is entirely geared to an audience 18 years and older. I don't really think I need to specify that here because it says it on the main page, but, just in case.
- First, I plan to do bi-weekly art dumps of sketches, concepts and doodles, which will be posted during the second and fourth weekends of the month. These consists of doodles, warm-ups, character concepts and interactions, and the general body of work I produce outside of doing commissions. Having a Patreon space for this kind of art gives me the opportunity to spend more time working on these kinds of drawings, which helps me avoid burnout and anxiety, as this is generally the kind of art I produce to unwind and experiment with my technique. I can't guarantee exactly what kind of quality you might expect to see from these uploads, but right now I'm expecting to prepare around 3-5 separate drawings per post at the very least, and they'll be touched up from however I initially produced them, so at least you won't be looking at chicken scratches or extremely rough thumbnails...unless you want to see that kind of thing, to which, hey, some people like seeing the process. Maybe I'll do a poll about that at a later time.
- Second, I'm going to be doing monthly illustration pieces. They'll be a single composed piece, usually depicting one or more characters, mostly likely in an illustrated environment, as part of some overall subject. Basically, a big dang art piece. These illustrations will be provided in monochrome and color variations, the visibility of which is dependent on which tier you subscribe to. For the time being, I plan on using OCs, either mine or other's with permission, as the subjects for these illustrations, although some months the subject might be an R34 one. Additionally, if you're subbed to the $10 tier, I'll be posting WIPs of these illustrations throughout the month.
For the time being, this is how I'll be starting out. I don't know exactly how much work all of this will be, but the worst possible scenario would be experiencing burnout within the first month of producing art for patrons, so I'd like to keep a reasonable schedule and see how I handle that for the first few months. That being said, I do have a few ideas for the future.
- Like I said above in the first bullet point, some of my doodles and sketches involve experimenting with current art techniques, but sometimes that also involves trying out new ones as well. I've been trying to develop a more painterly style for a while now, and if I get enough room to experiment with it via this platform, I might make painting rewards a part of the platform.
- Since I currently offer them by non-Patreon means, I don't really see a point in doing commissions on this platform at the present time, but I wouldn't mind finding ways to give patrons chances to get their characters drawn. I'll keep my suggestions box open.
- On that note, I'd also like to give patrons the ability to vote on polls for what future content I should produce, but that probably won't happen until I have a comfortable working rhythm for this platform.
- I've also bounced around the idea of doing comics. Now, I've tried doing comics before, so I at least somewhat understand the main mantra of doing comics solo: it's a lot of bleeping work. I wouldn't start doing a comics project unless I felt absolutely certain I could handle the workload, but there are a few story ideas rattling around in my head...
- Lastly, and the big personal one for me: animation. Those who have been followers of my work for a long time know that I used to dabble in 2D animation years ago, but for a large variety of reasons, that hasn't really been something I've been able to invest time and effort in for the last few years. If this platform really takes off and affords me the ability, I'd love to take that opportunity to return to making animations again.
Don't get too immediately excited at these: I have to get comfy here first. Once that happens, I'll look into this pool of ideas.
I'd also like to foster something of a community around my Patreon space. While it's not inherently necessary, I'd very much like to know what it is that people want to see me produce. Having an entire space just for posting sketches and character doodles means that there's ample potential for drawing things that patrons would like to see, and I'd like to make this platform as enjoyable to you, the patron, as it could be for me. To that extent, I'd like to keep communication tools open, so I can get whatever feedback I can on both my work and my platform.
One last major thing: exclusivity and public releases. To keep it short:
- Sketches and doodles: Will be kept exclusive for 2 weeks.
- Monochrome illustrations: exclusive for 3 weeks.
- Color illustrations: exclusive for 4 weeks.
That's all for my first Patreon post! Now, I know I said above that art dumps are on the second and fourth weekends of the month, but because I don't want patrons to have to wait that long for my first art upload, I'm planning some content to upload this coming first weekend of March. It probably won't be the size of a normal art dump post, but I just don't feel good leaving patrons waiting almost two weeks for my first post. Also, if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment on this post, and I'll also try to leave a general line of communication open as well.
