Melanie Griffith wasn't really known before this, which is why the third billing, whereas Ford and Weaver were both major stars. Griffith had broken through in "Something Wild" previously and had a few supporting roles before that, but this was her big break.
Mike Nichols almost fired her because she was partying constantly and halfway through the shoot, he had to sit her down and threaten to shut down the picture if she didn't straighten up (which she did).
As a further little bit of trivia, Mike Nichols originally cast Alec Baldwin as Jack Trainer, but the studios fought him as too unknown, so he was switched to playing Mick, and Nichols brought in Ford instead.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I was thrilled to see your reaction on YT (and it's one of the main reasons I joined here on Patreon)!
I come from a similarly poor and very blue-collar family/background, and I definitely understand Tess's desire to move forward in her life. I also really like the fact that she's basically evolving beyond her friend group (and it's very realistic that they support Mick over Tess because she won't "forgive him" for cheating). You can tell from the wedding scene that the only one she'll really stay in touch with is Cyn.
Meanwhile, I do think Melanie was terrific in this, and the movie really understands yearning -- it communicates it better than almost any other movie I've ever seen.
