The Prestige [2006] Movie Reaction

Comments

One of the most crucial scenes to understand Alfred's story is when they go to see that Asian magician. He has this trick that works really well only because he's 100% committed to the act through his entire life. Alfred and his twin lived one life in totality and that's what made that transporter trick so effective.

Nikola Tesla was a genius electrical engineer and inventor who made many contributions to our understanding of electricity and creating the modern AC power system (which we’re all using right now). His machine that you saw in the movie is a voltage transformer called a Tesla Coil and it’s real. Of course, in real life it doesn’t transport people or produce clones, it just channels electricity and looks beautiful. To answer Spartan’s question: Edison didn’t really invent the light bulb but he did perfect it for common use, so that’s why he often gets the credit. Edison and Tesla were on opposite sides of the ‘War of the Currents’ (late 1800’s) when inventors / entrepreneurs were fighting over which type of electric current was better and should be adopted by the world: Direct current (DC) was championed by Edison, and Alternating current (AC) was championed by Westinghouse (who Tesla worked for). So, there was a nasty rivalry between the two camps and Edison (who was a powerful businessman) sometimes resorted to intimidation and dirty tricks to squash the competition; that part is very true. Basically, Edison was better at marketing himself than eccentric geniuses like Tesla, so he got wider recognition by the general public for a long time. Personally, I would put Edison on the Sneaky Snake List! ;) I like that Nolan used a real historical backdrop for this movie... it kind of grounds the magical elements in a realistic setting.

I love your reactions so I'll watch this, but I really didn't like this movie lol

Interestingly, Robert could have just cloned himself once and kept the clone around and, in effect, mimiced Alfred's trick. However, he couldn't share the applause whereas Alfred and his twin didn't mind sharing accolades. This illuminates the difference between a twin and a clone. Robert's clone would have all of his weaknesses and obsessions whereas a twin has identical DNA but a separate existence. Alfred and his twin loved each other and thus could share credit. Robert couldn't love any of his clones in the same way because you sense that he didn't even love himself to begin with.

Yep. It was a perceived red herring that turned out to bear fruit.

We have witnessed a rare event. Spartan had a fuller understanding of the plot than Detective Pudgey.

Btw the scene with the asian man with the fishbowl shows amazing foreshadowing as to how Alfred knew the mans trick was the act all along in which he pretends every day of his life that he was walking slowly and knew the dedication it takes as him and his twin are living one life as an act

Ibrahim Emin

He sent him to Tesla to trick him, he was never gonna tell him his secret so he gave something that seems as if its the truth, although Tesla was actually able to build a machine for his obsession that it couldnt be a “double” when in reality it was a real double only it was a twin.

Ibrahim Emin

With the knot, for me it is clear that he did the tricky one. When Robert asks Borgen which knot he did, which happens 2 or 3 times in the movie, I guess he is asking the twin who was not on the stage that night

The Sandman might be quite enjoyable seeing how you liked this movie. It's a one season series on Netflix adapted from comics and has mystery, magic, and fantasy charm

They are Brothers!

Lou Dryka

Pudgey, they are twins😂 let the theories go😂

This was so satisfying; one of my favorite movies. Spartan, well done, you were with it most of the way; and were right that much of the audience didn’t get it at the final reveal, you just picked up on it earlier. But the twin brother reveal is my favorite; even though it may have taken Pudgey a little longer to understand, lol. Outside of the Dark Knight trilogy; the 3 Nolan movies you’ve watched completes the trifecta for me; his best 3, imo.

Oh shit, nice! That intro was great xD
