Shōgun Episode 10 Uncut

Comments

Season two is about John bathing for the second time. Joking aside, I greatly enjoyed your reaction. I had been wanting to watch this series, but was having trouble getting in the mindset and viewing it with you got me perfectly into it. Like you I wanted Mariko and Yabushige to stay alive for season 2, but didn’t realize that s1 was the end of the book so it made sense. I can’t wait to learn what they come up with for s2. I also wish that they had deviated from the book and actually shown the battle play out and Toranaga becoming Shogun. Like you I felt we watched the preparation without getting the payoff. The story creates an interesting question: Washington, Napolean, Patton - how many of their troops knew their third heart? And was Washington really reluctant to become the first President? I enjoyed your thoughts on the gorgeous title sequence. I think it will become iconic like the titles for Westworld, Severance, and Game of Thrones.

Mariko (EP1) : "Let her hands be the last to hold her son" Fuji (Ep10) : Let your hands be the last to hold her" The scenes of him as blackthorne as an old man was him dreaming/hallucinating while he was injured.

When John looked at Toranaga at the end and smiled, I think that was the moment he realized that it was Toranaga that blew up his ship: - to get all the hostages out of Osaka only cost Toranaga 1 woman. - to get an entire fleet only cost Toranaga destroying 1 ship.

When you thought you were rooting for Ned Stark but he was really Tywin Lannister. 😢Toranaga fooled us all. I believe it was in episode 2 when Mariko shows Jon the new Shogun armour Toranga had made. It always was in the back of my head, if he didn’t want to be Shogun why did he have that made? Toranaga was the true sneaky snake.

Damn this is one of the best shows I've ever watched. And to me, "Crimson Sky" felt like the finale. And this episode feels like a sunrise after a stormy night. Just a welcoming peace.

Toan Toan

Damn i never caught that one Omi was loyal to Toranaga through and through

midothegreat

That is why i was like Spartan is not gonna like it. And Pudgey is. Because it's more like Game of thrones season 1. Political. War and big battlefields are not the point. Spartan is more of the big epic things like Troy (what you still have not seen xD). But the smile in the end by toranaga means he wants to be Shogun all allong that why he smirked at the end!

john

Not to mention Omi gets rewarded for killing Ishidos men with the canons.

Yusuf

You guys are not silly. It is human nature to fall for people are charming, charismatic, skilled etc. Toranaga was was all those things but Ishido was never those things otherwise their ambitions were very similar. Toranaga was just far superior in skill, deception and charisma.

Yusuf

Toranaga always planned to be Shogun and is a very great example of a Machiavellian character.

Yusuf

Btw you guys should check out The Bear. Next to Shogun, they are the 2 biggest shows being done by FX at the moment. And just like Shogun, The Bear was only meant to be one season and end there but it turned out so good that they made more and now they just greenlit a fourth season.

Pablo

We actually see the exact moment john is dreaming the intro scene. It happens almost halfway through the episode when he wakes up and he can still hear the voices of his dreamed grandchildren

Pablo

Its more like game of thrones season 1 pure character work

Pablo

Fantastic season. Loved these reactions. Yes, him seeing himself as an old man back in London is a dream not a flashback. This never happens. I think the reason for the void you felt was that people told you it was "Samurai Game of Thrones". Shogun is a purely political drama. It's not The Last Samurai or Game of Thrones in the sense that Game of Thrones had action and war. This was pure politics and the human drama around these figures. The war wasn't the focus or the point.

Farbod

I'm so far behind on the shogun reactions. Think I'm gonna have to binge them this weekend!

DRIP DROP

“Flowers are only flowers because they fall, but thankfully the wind” Mariko was the flower but she was also the seed that the wind will gently take away and bloom into something beautiful (Toranagas era of peace). Mariko was Crimson Sky.

Demo

"why tell a dead man the future" was the exact thing yabushige said in episode 1 (think it was 1)to omi about torranaga when he believed he would die.

I am still on the fence about Shogun getting two additional seasons. There is no question that there is a lot more Samurai history and there are several more books in the series by the same author but they cover other periods &/or places. However if they want to continue this story by using the real life story these characters were based on that only covers around another 15 years. Those years really could only provide a seasons worth of material not 2. Also if they do adhere to the true history Toranaga's story will become the living embodiment of the Batman quote "You either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain". Which I truly don't know how people will feel if the show does that story because it undoes a lot and recalibrates Toranaga's motivation forcing you to question everything you believed about him. The truth about the ruse Toranaga played in this season began long before the first episode's timeline. I am not sure how many people picked up on the fact Omi was always working against his Uncle & selling him out the entire time, he was the highest ranking spy vassal in Lord Toranaga's service. Toranaga played the long game and all of his actions were calculated & calibrated to his clearly understanding what the actions of everyone in his service would do.
