Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) - Full Reaction

Oh boy oh boy... I liked seeing "Wesley", and definitely had plenty of laugh out loud moments but there were also some jokes that were just so... written by teenage boys? I've said it before, not my favorite type of humor, but I think I could appreciate the spoofing a little more after seeing prince of thieves haha! Hope you enjoy!

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) - Full Reaction

Comments

Fun fact: The guy playing Little John (Eric Allen Kramer) is the first live action Thor. He played the role of Thor in the TV movie "The Incredible Hulk Returns" Some years later, he played the dad in the Disney show "Good Luck Charlie"

Michael Jung

I love this one because I am a lifelong Robin Hood fan, but Brooks was funnier earlier in his career. His later work wasn't very good, particularly Spaceballs and Dracula Dead and Loving It. I highly recommend Young Frankenstein, especially with Halloween coming up. So many classics got knocked out that I think you would love, like It Happened One Night (amazing old comedy film and one of my faves and a wonderful rom com) and Lawrence of Arabia, to me the greatest film of all time. For not so scary Halloween fare I'd recommend Arsenic & Old Lace (another old time comedy with Cary Grant), Ready Or Not, Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein (more old Hollywood), Clue (hilarious), Beetlejuice, the Addams Family films, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit, Misery, and Rebecca, to name a few.

Back in the day when Blazing Saddles was released, it just simply mocked racists and racism, and now it is seen as triggering. That's too bad.

MikeLL

All great suggestions.

Carilyn Seymour

Mel Brooks isn't faring much better than Tim Burton here it seems. Personally, I liked Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, but I'm worried it won't go over very well here. Especially Blazing Saddles with all the racist comments and songs

Shawn Kildal

When she says "not my favorite" I interpret that as "I hated it"

Shawn Kildal

....or Lukas Moodysson and "Show me love"?? Yes I'm repeating myself...

Björn Karlsson

Well, that was kinda painful to watch. I haven’t seen this since it came out. I don’t remember it being particularly great at the time. But it seemed pretty silly watching it now. I think it safe to say, Cassie isn’t a fan of Mel Brook’s style of humor. I don’t think Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein is going to do much to change that. Even though those were better films. Perhaps it’s time for another director. Maybe the Farrelly Brothers and “There’s Something About Mary”?

Robert da Spruce

You are kidding... right?!

Doug Fisher

Actually, it was jabbing (not mocking) all of the actors who played Robin in the past. Errol Flynn didn't exactly have an English accent either.

Doug Fisher

I think everyone would agree that when suggesting Comedy Films to Cassie, No One would have suggested Men in Tights. That being said, if you are doing a Robin Hood Theme week, then you would have to suggest Men in Tights for that. Yes, it's stupid and silly, but it has its moments of laugh out loudness. There was the 3 Punch Combo of scenes that actually knocked Cassie over. The Broomhilde getting on the horse scene for the Jab, followed by Blinkin falling out of the tree for the Right Cross. Then the Left Hook of the Men in Tights song & dance, and down she went, laughing all the way. Look on the bright side, this just gets her closer to wanting to see Mel Brooks' earlier films. His earlier films were his best. I like to think they were better because they had their own story. Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, & History of the World weren't parodies of any specific films, like his later ones. They were broad parodies of a certain genre, (Hitchcock is a genre to himself, right?) and Mel Brooks created a unique story that worked within that genre. Young Frankenstein is a parody of the original Universal Monster pictures, while also being a pseudo-sequel to the original Frankenstein. Spaceballs, Men in Tights, & Dracula: Dead and Loving It kind of abandoned the broadness, and just went for parodying specific films and their original stories. This made these films' stories less unique and interesting, and really just all about jokes and gags. I still get enjoyment out of watching these films anyways. I think I have a great ability of holding onto my childhood. Any films I liked as a child, I still like. There is a special place in my Heart for these films. I have favorite moments and scenes from all of them, that will make me chuckle just thinking about them. Broomhilde head-butting the horse as she takes off is one. Everytime I hear the name Abbott, I have to stop myself from saying, "Hey Abbaaat!!!!" Also, even though she'll probably never watch Dracula on this channel, every scene Peter MacNicol is in is comedy gold.

Larry Darrell

I walked out of this movie when it was in theaters. Liking the comments confirming I didn’t miss out.

Dennis Shogren

Officially the worst movie Cassie has watched. I was actually embarrassed for her. 🙄

John Cranberry

Hot Shots is worth it, especially now with Top Gun fresh in mind. Generally I find the Zucker/Abrams (Airplane!) brand of this kind of comedy sharper than Brooks'. In fact Part Deux is my favorite parody movie of all time.

Robin T

Cassie, a lot of these jokes are unfortunately not obvious unless you're more familiar with the 90s. The Reebox pumps, the Malcom X speech, etc. There are better movies out there for you to react to. I, for one, would love to see you react to the following. The movie "Clue" is amazing, and one of the most quoteable movies I can think of. Everyone who see it loves it. And "Little Shop of Horrors" is a musical comedy that has a love story, great comedy by recognizable legends, and one of the best movie soundtracks out there. I highly suggest adding both to your upcoming polls. And as for a Holloween suggestion, how could you not do "Rocky Horror Picture Show?"

Ross Warshaw

I would say the 94 Jungle Book is better then any new ones just as Snow White A Tale of Terror is better then any other takes.

GamerGal8684

Cary Elwes plays heroes very well, but I think he plays villains even better. He did a great job as a villain in Jungle Book (1994). I hope you get around to watching it someday. It's very underrated.

Nathan Bishop

Yes, the English accent comment was mocking Kevin Costner, but they also mocked Morgan Freeman by putting dots on Isaac Hayes face.

The Real NC Picker

This movie is awful :(

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

I don't know that I've watched this movie since I first saw it in the theater. I was surprised at how many gags I remembered (and how many I either forgot or just didn't get at the time). For me, it's middle-tier Mel Brooks. About on the same level as SPACEBALLS and DRACULA, DEAD AND LOVING, but not nearly as good as his brilliant earlier efforts like THE PRODUCERS and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. It's definitely more rewarding experience if you've seen both the Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner movies (my favorite joke this time was actually when they started fighting with shadow hand puppets; that was a cute nod to director Michael Curtiz's penchant for shadowplay, which you can see on display in both THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and CASABLANCA; Spielberg does that a lot in his movies as well because he's a big fan of Michael Curtiz) as well as some of brooks's other films like BLAZING SADDLES and HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART 1 as he drops a few references to those in there as well.

Stick Figure Studios

Thank God you're done commenting.

The Real NC Picker

Goon is a great sports movie. As is Slap Shot, Tin Cup, For Love of the Game.

Jacob Colson

Yep... another very juvenile film. I don't know why people keep wanting you to watch the dumbest comedies out there. There are so many really smart funny films out there, but they keep giving you Robin Hood: MiT, NL's Vacation, Big Lebowski, Space Balls.... and for some reason you keep falling for it. Lethal Weapon, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, 48 Hours, House Sitter, and so on... are all out there waiting to be watched.

Art of Free Speech

Carly with you for Young Frankenstein?

Celeste McAllister

Deh deh deh dehhhhh deh dah dahhhhh!!!...The "Why my life sucks" game I'm going to try it out with my kids..

Celeste McAllister

YF is his best work, imho

Jedi Psy

A Fish Called Wanda is an EPIC suggestion, love it!

Jedi Psy

I would hope that we can suggest other comedies for Cassie to watch that are not like most modern gross out comedies (NL Vacation) or other parody comedies like this movie. There were several different types of comedies that didn't make it in the Chaos bracket, some rom coms (It Happened One Night, Roman Holiday) and screwball comedies (Bringing Up Baby) that I think Cassie would have liked. We should encourage Cassie to see some comedies that are not silly and gross out, some more adult comedies like Trading Places or Being There. Coming To America. A Fish Called Wanda. Some non silly comedies.

MikeLL

Cassie has got to see Vertigo and The Birds before she sees High Anxiety. At least The Birds is coming next month. It's too bad some of the comedies in the Chaos bracket didn't make it through. There was an early rom com (It Happened One Night), an early screwball comedy (Bringing Up Baby) and other comedies that are quite unlike the parody comedies like Brooks made.

MikeLL

+1 for To Be or Not To Be (1983). It's been a while since I've seen it but I remember it to be very entertaining.

Gábor Árki

I’m with on this film. It’s funny and has its moment but it’s mid tier Mel Brooks film. His early stuff is much better.

Alex Gorell

thanks for the heads up! just added that to the post

Cassie

I really like the song over the end credits of this movie. This concludes my review.

Jason Chirevas

Yeah, Im with you on the type of humor. I cant ever make it through these kinds of movies. Just bleh

Hannah Mather

The line you did at the end of your intro was from Meet the Parents😂

Cole Jennett

That's pretty much Mel Brooks humor. sex or toilet humor and sight gags. Another side of Brooks is "To Be or Not To Be". Still comedy but without the gags

Jon Freezin-Rain

Those really are the only three Brooks films that hold up.

Matt Rose

This movie is free on YouTube, just a heads up for everyone.

aarswft

With the exception of Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks is more of a throw it at the wall and see what sticks kind of filmmaker.

Tim Raths

Humour in general and spoofs in particular are really subjective. What one person finds uproariously funny, someone else will be puzzled by. As someone else said, "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles" are by far the best "spoofs" of their genre (1930's Universal Studios Horror movies and Westerns respectively), that Mel Brooks has done. The later ones were much weaker.

Julian Corbett

I was NEVER going watching this again, but it was worth it just to hear you laugh out loud. There is some genuine hee-haw, knee-slappin’ funny in this and I completely forgot a young comedian named Dave Chappelle was in this.

Ike

When Ahchoo was giving the pep speech, they were sending up Denzel Washington in Malcolm X

Brian McGovern

Mel Brooks did his best work in the 60s and 70s, like: "The Producers" (1967) "The 12 Chairs" (1970) "Silent Movie" (1976) "High Anxiety" (1977) I think his best in the 80s was "History of The World Part 1" (1981) His mid to late 80s and 90s releases were just... okayyyyy, in my opinion. In 1974, he released the both hilarious "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein" but I feel his other 70s flix don't get enough attention.

Prof. Writhms

Young Frankenstein is the only Mel Brooks film I thought was funny.

Grinznmore

Thank God this week is over. That's all I'll say.

Shehab Dawoud

I hope you eventually get round to Brooks' earlier films in future. "The Producers", "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles" are bona fide classics.

Jake McNulty

This movie sucks. When people were recommending this, I was just cringing imagining Cassie watching it for the first time lol. Same thing with SpaceBalls.

Johnny

oh yes young Frankenstein for Halloween month

zynjams

saw it once a long time ago, dont need to see it again. I hope you enjoy it.

zynjams

Juvenile humor is good when it's clever, this is just juvenile. Had fun watching it once, but it's not a movie I'd own. Thanks for the reaction Cassie!

Allen Bond

I’d love to see a Hot Shots reaction and now I’m somewhat interested to how Cassie would react to the Ferrelly Brothers.

Andrew Hogan

It’s curious as to how you seemed to love Flying High and did not love this or The Naked Gun. I guess it is the crass nature of some of the jokes. I would normally recommend Hot Shots 1 & 2 but it is the same sort of humour, not sexual humour. They are spoofs of Top Gun and Rambo. However if you did not like naked gun, probably not much chance of you liking those. Mind you, I think this was a bit juvenile of Mel Brooks comedy. Not my favourite but he did not get any better. I think you will love his Young Frankenstein though. Your mother suggested that as something to watch, didn’t she?
