Thor: Love and Thunder - Full Reaction

We have been wanting to watch this one for a while! All in all it was fun, loved the cameos, love my Chris’s (including Christian Bale in that too). My favorite was the last third, sometimes the tone was hard to figure out, even scene to scene! More thoughts in the video, hope you enjoy!

Thor: Love and Thunder - Full Reaction

Comments

Today (May 13, 2023) was my second viewing of this movie. I haven’t rewatched it since I saw it in the theater last May (2022). Unfortunately i didn’t care for it the first time around. So when I saw Cassie and Carly were reacting to it, I had to tune in. And yes watching them react to it made it more enjoyable. However after coming off Ragnarok (which i loved and was one of my top ten of that year) still made this 4th Thor series into a let down. If there is a 5th one in the works, hopefully they make it more tolerable.

Joe M

The moment I walked out of the theater with my buddies, I immediately said, "So a lot of people are going to HATE that!" lol And my reasoning for them was, "Ragnarok was a Thor movie directed by Taika Waititi, while Love & Thunder is a Taika Waititi movie that just so happens to have Thor in it!" It just went balls to the wall with every single second it had and hung a large portion of the comedy on a 10 year old meme. I felt like Waititi was laughing himself silly at the storyboards so bad that he didn't realize the story makes almost no sense! Haha! To be honest though, I had a blast with this. It was REALLY stupid, but that is definitely what they were going for. I think there were story sacrifices that were made that didn't need to be, but I think Waititi accomplished what he set out to do. It was a fever dream of a movie featuring an insane cast and wild implications for the MCU. I REALLY hope they either reign in Waititi or move on to another director if they end up doing another Thor film, though. I don't think they can really go more over the top than this movie without losing a good portion of us fans, unfortunately.

Jeremy Alexander

This movie was… terrible. Completely oversaturated with jokes and honestly almost felt like a collection of bloopers. No substance, just joke after joke. Zeus has to have been at least partly inspired by David Brent from The Office. Marvel has lost it.

Martin Skouboe

The goats are glorious. I love the goats. They are nothing but amazing. Imagine trying to convince your team that this idea should be in the movie. Awesome... About the movie as a whole: I like many of the ideas, and I liked parts of it, but it feels... messy. I thought about why it doesnt work well and in the end I came to the conclusion, that it needed more time. It should have been a mini series of like 4-6 episodes. The mood swings each made sense, in a way, but it was too rushed. The settings were intresting, but we had no time to explore them. I like the characters, but they didn't have much room. Imagine the start having a few more minutes. As it is right now, we have a strange foreign setting, within the first minute a child dies, within the next minute we see a guy meet his god (!), lose his faith, be corrupted, become a god-like being himself and slay his former god. It was so rushed, the poor guy didn't even have time to cry because his daughter died just a few steps away from the oasis that could have saved her! The reveal of Jane. We see her fight one battle and thats it. We could have used 30 Minutes to explore how she feels about the whole unlimited power thing. We just skipped over that! All these things could have been 45 minutes in a mini series and it would have worked...

I don't appreciate the way they've turned Thor from a dignified noble hero into a mindless baffoon. If they make a 5th Thor movie, I hope they use a more mature director and writers.

Steve Smith

Movie was 🤮

John Cranberry

I can see why people thought the scene where Thor shared his power with the kids was creepy - but honestly? After seeing their homeworld blow up, becoming refugees on Earth, getting kidnapped bt the God Butcher, and imprisoned in a cage for days, I think those kids' innocence was long gone. By that point, it probably felt incredibly empowering for them to know the God of Thunder had enough faith in them to grant them the Power of Thor and let them fight their way back home.

Michael Jung

Love and Thunder is in my top 5 MCU films lol humor was right up my alley

Elmo

I’m glad you mostly enjoyed it but the MCU really lost me on this one. And the inconsistent tone you spoke of is a big part of the problem. Thor is becoming a less serious character with every outing.

Mr Trick

I once ordered "The Official Natalie Portman Chemistry Set" and all I got was a box full of empty test tubes.

Albert Nada

I was wondering if you and your sister realize that by laughing at what Zeus did to Thor you are actually laughing at the sexual assault of a male character. True it's "supposed to be funny" but that in and of itself is part of the problem. At any rate your reaction was disgusting.

Albert Nada

Everything is GotG jokey now, because non-creative execs saw how well it went over in GotG 1 that they decided every movie was going to be like that (even Star Wars). Not realizing that it worked for THAT movie due to the nature of it.

Doug Fisher

I actually watched it like right at the beginning of the channel not even thinking of doing reactions to TV yet, man I love it, I want to be his best friend

Cassie

Love this Jason, so true!

Cassie

OMG! I had no idea you could hear that! I will put it on DND from now on, whoopsadaisy

Cassie

Yes!! Exactly what you said, seems more fun to make than watch, and i feel like the first scene with him and his daughter was amazing, like it could have been epic but then it went all over the place

Cassie

aaannnddd.....

Cassie

oooh i think i do remember hearing that!! So good! Sign Liam up too in there haha

Cassie

WAIT... you two have seen Ted Lasso and didn't do a reaction for us to watch along with?! :-(

MJ

I'm in the same demographic as Jason and I have to say I have noticed some of the same things. It seems like some of the recent projects do seem to try and make inclusion a key part of the story but you know what, I'm enjoying seeing other voices tell  their stories.  I remember when we had at best 3 or 4 sci-fi/super hero shows at a time and even then your Superman (Lois & Clark) was let's make it an evening drama based on their relationship.  You had a smattering of good cartoons as well but they were still kid's shows.  Not to mention that some of the movies being made used the comics as source material but then ignored the major elements of those comics.  I'm so happy to live in a world in which we have major studios pumping out quality content and I'm getting new Star Trek, Star Wars, superhero, and other great sci-fi/fantasy movies and shows on a weekly basis.  I loved Ms. Marvel and thoroughly enjoyed how the history of an event like partition played into the story.  I thought Reva was a great add to Star Wars.  I'm LOVING She-Hulk and keep wrecking my Thursdays by staying up on Wednesday to watch each new episode at 2 AM!  I'm a self proclaimed "easy" fan.  I don't look to any show or movie to change my life or validate my worldview, all I ask is you entertain me for 30 minutes or a couple of hours and that is not hard to do. Many times I feel like I have learned about other points of view and found respect for them. There are  other reasons why I think that so much is made of these issues. First, there is a lot more content being put out so that means there is room for different points of view and they won't be for everybody. Second, there are  people (artists) who are pushing to normalize different lifestyles and cultures and that has been done through art for centuries.  Third, whether you like it or not, we live in a world where controversy sells.  We have multiple 24 hour media outlets and if you haven't noticed for and entire hours worth of time you get 25 mins of ads, 25 mins of talking heads and opinions as to why "we" are right and "they" are wrong, 8 minutes of facts, and 2 minutes of a feel good story at the end of the show.  It's the same with reviews and comments and entertainment channels on YT.  I am so happy to be able to say I liked the first Thor movie better than the fourth and I'm not sure where they will be going with the fifth, all the while looking forward to the next thing coming out tomorrow.  I also get to watch PiB reactions and talk with people like all of you about what we like and dislike as well as what we hope to see in the future. This is a great time to be alive.

Jason Fulbright

The quality of Marvel movies and tv shows has absolutely fallen through the floor in the last few years. Terrible.

Just Plain Bob

Chris helmoswrth’s real brother plays as him in the plays with Matt Damon

TinCan Cosmanaut

Thor Ragnarok was one of my favorite movies from start to finish. Taika is one of my favorite directors. This had a good finish but way to over the top the first two thirds.

Scott O

Sorry I think I’ll wait for the YT edit as I don’t think I can watch it again lol. Personally I thought it was one of the worst MCU movies the only thing a thought was good was Bales performance, just a shame it was wasted on a poor movie.

Dean Holt

Well said. I too wished for a proper backstory of Gorr, Love and Jane. I like how you tied those two stories together. I would have liked to have seen Odin welcome Jane and Gorr (I mean why not?) to Valhalla. I did cry a little when Gorr saw his daughter again, but that went quickly away when she was shown as a little brat (huge mistake by the writers).

Ike

My issue with this movie - and this comes from someone with zero knowledge of the comic books - was that there were two storylines here which could've been really moving, dramatic and profound. (a) Jane dying of cancer and clinging to her superpowers to stave off death. (b) The entire tragic story of the main villain. And both storylines seemed largely forgotten about by the movie's own screenplay. The two storylines even had parallels with each other, and the ending could have intertwined them. Jane could've been the one to confront Gor and tell him that it's time to finally let go (the subtext being that she was talking about herself as well). But instead of exploring these two themes that the movie setup, 99% of the screen time was devoted to sidequests and jokes (that weren't that funny). I don't mind humor in these movies, but not when they come at the expense of what should be the heart(s) of the story.

WastedPo

Did the director clear that up in an interview? I would love to see/read that if you have a link? That's so interesting, if true. Not sure it saves the movie for me, but I would forgive a ton of silliness if it's true. I mean, I know he's telling the story in the beginning, but it failed to explain it through-out the movie.

Philip Alan

You have the correct feelings. Ragnarok is superb. This was not. Oh, and Matt Damon was in Ragnarok, btw, playing the same role. And on a side note, you have me checking my phone all the time when I watch your reactions. Your phone's vibrating notifications get me every time! haha!

Philip Alan

What the Hell are you talking about?

Mike Lemon

Hopefully Everafter

I hadn’t watched this film yet. I had been waiting to watch along with you guys since you announced you’d be reacting to it. I gotta say, I didn’t really enjoy it. The first half of the movie felt way too over the top. It felt like one of those movies that was funner to make than to watch. Like the actors kept saying to each other, “You know be funny here? If I did…(insert joke here)”. The second half was better. But I don’t think I’ll be revisiting this one anytime soon. I think I’m gonna go watch some Kobra Kai to cleanse the palette. 😀

Robert da Spruce

I agree that Pepper Pots becoming a super hero made no sense. But I enjoyed Jane as one. Thor has had a long journey, he's lost so many people. He couldn't avenge Thanos killing Loki, Heimdall, and half of the Asgardians. We saw how it affected him in End Game. This movie showed a continuation of him trying to find happiness in life. I liked that part of the movie. But yeah, the goats were annoying.

Eddie

It probably won't win this time, but Face/Off is a film that you two MUST watch. It's Nicholas Cage and John Travolta directed by Jon Woo. Jim Carrey, Christopher Walken and William Shatner in a Kabuki class can't match the crazy overacting this movie contains.

ElementCuatro

Gorr won (would have killed all the gods) yet the love of Jane and Thor and her sacrifice and Thors speech made him realize what he really wanted. Plus the necromancer sword was destroyed. Jane told Thor you won’t be alone after I die. Best writing of the movie.

Sean Stuart

I like the goat humor at first then im like please stop and it stopped then brought it back and with it the biggest laugh of my theater going audience including me when they crashed into planet

Sean Stuart

If I hadn’t seen it in 4DX, I probably would have fallen asleep.

Rose

I watched this movie for the first time and honestly, I had a tough time getting through it. I kept checking how much time was left. After watching the credits, it was cool to see that the little girl was Chris’ real life daughter. It’s cute to imagine how close that is to real life trying to get her to put on her boots and Thor’s wolf lady love interest is his real life wife who has been in a few of the Fast and Furious movies

Tara

lets kill off jane and resurrect a dead girl. weak writing

zynjams

there were some good things in there, but it never really seemed necessary

JL_83

I've lost my taste since the last Thor. I liked how each movie had its own tone and Thor was always a bit darker and sadder. Dark world is probably my favorite of all them, but ragnarok got all giddy and jokey like the guardians movies which I didn't mind because that's what I expected from. Guardians movies, not Thor movies.

Bubba Fett

Kinda it's phase 4 movies that are overrated.

David Freese

The movie is told in the perspective of Korg the kronan, which in my opinion makes it a better movie.

Daniel jackson

It seems to be mimicking the comics in that way. They’ve retold the same stories, or come up with new ones that really don’t capture anyone’s attention. New characters are just rehashes of old ones or offspring with similar powers. I’m not as down on the shows as everyone else is, but to be fair, I’m not as familiar with those characters as I have been with the iconic ones.

Andrew Hogan

Even after hearing about this didn't turn out to be a good movie and I lowered my expectations, oh boy this was hard to get through. The tone of this movie is all over the place. It feels like someone wrote a script that could have been the best Thor movie so far giving a lot of depth to the characters but then the pages got all mixed up with a Mel Brooks parody version. It simply didn't work and the absurdity and ridiculousness of it completely undermined even the serious moments. I feel like phase 4 has been an endless downward spiral in quality so far. Hard to imagine this is the same franchise that gave us Winter Soldier, Civil War, etc. They managed to make me indifferent, or some cases like Wanda even dislike the older characters while haven't been able to introduce anyone or anything that I find intriguing or interesting enough to care for. The only one character and story I'm still interested in at this point is Spiderman.🙄

Gábor Árki

Unpopular opinion ... marvel movies are overrated

Choux D Bruxelles

Ah, the Marvel movie that went full on clown-show. Rivaled only by She-Hulk in it's absurdity. Phase 4 has been a steady nosedive into complete mediocrity.🙄

Brian Jones

I agree. But this has been a growing issue for awhile. Everyone loves Tony Stark, because he’s quick witted, but a lot of that was RDJ. He’s always had that ability. So, I’m sure Feige saw that success and wanted others to mimic it for maximum profit. Slowly every character started to morph into a part time stand up. I love comedy, but as I stated earlier, less is more most of the time, and when injected properly and timely can be a great tool. For whatever reason T2 popped into my head. A serious movie, but with a charismatic actor injecting humor in every now and then to lighten the mood. A perfect blend of emotions. This was just insert joke here comedy. It’s fine, but I think they could do better.

Andrew Hogan

If done well, yes, but to me the ‘comedy’ was very childish. But hey, I still love Dumb and Dumber so, I get it to a point.

Andrew Hogan

Thank you.

Andrew Hogan

I was never a huge fan of Ragnarok. And for those who think this movie went too far in the comedy department, but they really liked Ragnarok, I tell them that the road to this movie's excesses was paved in Ragnarok. I think the direction Takia Waititi has taken the Thor character is too far from the origin of the character Stan Lee created. I loved the “thees” and “thous” the character used in the Marvel comics. I know I am in an extreme minority in that fandom. I don't like that Asgard was destroyed (yeah, yeah I know the “Asgard isn't a place, its a people” propaganda). I understand that they killed most of the regular Asgard characters like the Warrior Three because they had made the allotted appearances mandated by the actors contracts. I just think Marvel didn't know what to do with the Thor character. Kenneth Branagh was the only filmmaker they assigned to Thor that embraced the character's origin. The direction that Waititi took him in seemed to be popular, but don't count me as a fan. I admire Waititi's obvious talent, and think the writing in this movies conclusion redeems some of the movies excesses. I really like that Jane got to die a Warrior's death and reach Valhalla, that was very touching, as was the fate of Gorr's daughter and the revelation at the end that she was the Love in Love and Thunder. Phenomenal writing, but I still am not a fan of taking Thor from his place in the pantheon of Asgard and turning him into Stand Up Comedy Thor.

MikeLL

I actually loved the extreme ridiculousness and extreme tragedy of Thor: Love and Thunder. Movies that go completely goofy (Batman and Robin) lack sufficient stakes to get me invested while movies that take themselves too seriously (Man of Steel) just wear me out. I think films that offer scenes that can make you feel genuine sadness and then make you laugh out loud a few seconds later challenge you to accept that extreme comedy and tragedy regularly exist side-by-side. It's telling that you guys were laughing hysterically in one moment while also feeling really bad for Jane, Korg, and Thor in the next.

Michael Jung

It was okay. Not one I feel like revisiting anytime soon but not a disaster as some claim. I'm just getting a little tired of the joke-joke-punch, joke-joke-punch routine which is basically Marvel's house style at this point.

Patrick Flanagan

Did you know that the little girl at the end IS Chris Hemsworth's daughter? I think they are setting up a Father / Daughter, almost spoof of LOGAN, for the next installment, that will probably complete Taika Waititi's Thor Trilogy, and wrap up the character in the MCU. I'm predicting Thor and Jane will finally be able to be together in Valhalla.

Jason Dolan

Taika is still one of the more interesting filmmakers out there and I've enjoyed every movie he has made. He does have the sensibility of a 13 year old boy, Cassie called that one right, haha

Jason Dolan

It significantly under performed lmao. Of course ppl came out to see the hyped new MCU film. Yet it bottom'd out week to week and got horrible reviews/word of mouth. Sounds like you're coping.

DustinChecksIn

The goats made me laugh each and every time.

Jen Barnes

Good point

Jason Dolan

For all the hate this movie gets, it's funny that it made more money than Thor Ragnarok domestically and overall is the 13th highest grossing film in the MCU... it's almost as if there's a silent majority that love this movie, lol

Jason Dolan

I enjoyed this reaction, but I am so glad you agreed that the humor that overshadowed some serious drama. I felt the same in Avengers: Endgame with all the fat jokes about Thor. It’s funny! but it belied the pain underneath. This one took a steep dive into narrative neglect for cheap dialogue. I think the only part I recognize was Thor’s speech to the Kids in the Cage.

Ike

I think this movie has been very important for the MCU. It's exposed the fact that movie goers lack all nuance. People think a movie can only be one thing. "Oh this is serious, but wait they told a joke! I have no idea how to react to this movie now! I only have one emotion at a time!" People use comedy to deflect or deal with tragedy all the time. It's also wrong to see this as a response to the audiences reaction to Ragnarok. This film is in response to the peoples experience of making Ragnarok. Chris Hemsworth has said multiple times he was done. Taikias Thor kept him in the game and the actors in this movie wanted more fun. For the whiners that want boring Thor back, if you get it, it won't be with Hemsworth.

aarswft

I too hate fun movies. It's such a burden

aarswft

I liked to hear Taika talk about his favorite moment in Star Wars in the Disney Star Wars Gallery specials.

Ike

Cassie, one of the very few movies on your channel I have not seen yet, and will be watching for the first time with y'all 😉

Jon Johns

its a good movie if you realize the whole story is told thru Korg's eyes not Thor's or anyone else just Korg, then it makes sense.

Jayson Phillips

While I def enjoyed this film, I can admit that it isn't the strongest outing and Taika went ham on the comedy. I'm a big fan so it didn't bother me but I can appreciate that others didn't enjoy it. Disney had a massive hard-on for him to do a bunch of movies including Star Wars (which I do not think Taika actually wants to do) and I have a sneaky suspicion that cuzzie did this on purpose so he could bow out without having to dis Disney directly... Couple bits of inside info - The dude who played Thor in the play along side Matt Damon is Chris Hemsworths actual real life brother (who plays a major character in the Westworld TV series), the dude playing Odin was Sam Neill and the goats are directly from the comics and have been asked for by fans for a while now. I can see how the goats would've been a bit jarring without that knowledge! Bonus info, there are 2 Maori gods in the film as well (Seeing as Taika has Maori heritage) Thor drops the god of wars name, Tumatauenga and you see Hine Nui Te Po, the Goddess of Death in the audience in front of Zeus.

Jedi Psy

Fun movie!

Matthew Dunham

I wouldn't call it "PC." Its okay not to like it, but don't make stuff up.

Armchair Rizzard

I really liked "The Profesional" and "Heat" as to Natlie, and other movies she has made, but not ths. This is like Michael Keaton in 1989 Batman. He was not physically up to the role. She is "Thorette" to me in this. Don't do this PC anti male thing on Thor.... It ticks me off.

Richard Bourne

I honestly don't have the patience to sit through this film again, and I've never felt that way about a Marvel film. I'll wait to see your thoughts in the YT edit :)

Foggy

I realize this is in the comic book series, which I did not follow, but I am calling her Thorette.

Richard Bourne

Thor in the theater scene is played by Chris Hemsworth brother Luke, just like in Ragnarok.

Rippan

Sounds like you had the same reaction everyone else had. Amazing how they went from saving the Thor character in ragnarok, to almost destroying it with the next one.

Brian McGovern

Agreed. I know everyone loved Ragnarok, but you could tell Marvel was headed this way since RDJ left. They’re looking for the next comedy guy and while Hemsworth is good at it, I think they lean too heavily on it at times. Less is more.
