Hey guys!
Oh boy oh boy, I know I get myself too psyched but I can't help it! it feels just so real when I am watching. For hours after every tiny light flicker or noise sent me spiraling. Then in the morning I felt kind of silly but sheeessshhhh ka bob, some of those moments fired every nerve in my body!
I will be on a movie podcast discussing this movie so I won't give away too many of my thoughts but in the end #mompower!

Cassie - It is in this movie that I can now see why Steven Spielberg came out with my favorite movie "Always" just 7 years later. He plays parts of the 1943 original film (a friendly ghost flavored story) on the TV.
Please do a reaction to the 1989 "Always" movie! It's a VERY heart warming love story, around airplane firefighting, which featuring Audrey Hepburn in her last motion picture role. And as others have said in different posts, be sure to have your tissues handy.

Shockingly scary at the time, but maybe a bit over the top. I however was not scared on a religious basis. This was a special effects movie and didn't scare me as much as the Exorcist.

I think Cassie did very well here. I was trying to say this is great storytelling with how the movie progresses. It's all great fun. Yes the mom was smoking a doobie. The reaction was probably accurate when paranormal stuff happens to you in broad daylight starting out when chairs were being rearranged. Might want to experiment with it like JoBeth/the mom. She says "...think back to when you had an open mind" lol...
And wait the dad was responsible for selling 42% of the properties there? Whoa...
For more great storytelling (in the dark) THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (2018) only 10 episodes. I recommend everyone (other than Cassie) to watch it on a big screen in the middle of the night with all the lights turned off. Many scenes are in the dark so you meld with that world and become one with it and you ruminate in the story being revealed. It's a feel good to be scared in the dark kind of world.

well that was pretty fun 😊 I just finished the full reaction moments ago. What a great way to enjoy a classic, with Cass terrified on the left corner. Toward the end they just wanted to reveal that the bodies were still in the ground. But the house being swallowed is pretty cool.
It's a great way to tell a story, with the whispering scenes making it feel like late at night... well worth the full viewing.

The year was 1983. I was eight years old, in love with my 15 year old babysitter who was also my friend's older sister, and Poltergeist was playing constantly on HBO. She loved horror movies so every time it was on, she'd call me over and we'd watch it on the couch and scream and laugh and it was just the best time. Almost 40 years ago now. Funny. I don't even remember her name.

I also wanted to add , if you're into creature feature type of monsters , 10 Cloverfield Lane is good , along with Cloverfield . Also , The Mist is good , with great monsters . It's similar to Cloverfield Lane .

If this movie was too scary for you , give the movie Christine and Maximum Overdrive a chance . They're both horror movies , but without the scary looking monsters . Christine is about a posessed Plymouth Fury , and Maximum Overdrive is similar , but it's about big rig trucks that came to life .

The Ring was actually a really good paced out story to. But it wasn't too slow by any means, just a good flow. And yeah a lot of it's not really that scary, it's more just a great eerie well built movie. I'm not even sure if the story is all that good...... It's kind of the combination of the cinematography, effects, characters, and story as a package. I know that sounds so base but, and basic that's it.

Hey, since you must have enjoyed the Poltergeist movie, I would recommend watching the Paranormal Activity movie. but since it is very scary and also involves many jumpscares, you need to know whether you want to watch the film alone or with someone else. But I can also highly recommend it.

And then there’s the Poltergeist II sequels. If anyone remembers the creepy LDS song “God is in His Holy Temple” used to scare the frick

It's fascinating to watch how differently people can react to "scary" scenarios. I'm one of the weirdos that does that stuff for fun. I've stayed overnight in Lizzie Borden's house for two nights in the room where she killed Abbie Borden, the Villisca Axe Murder House, The Eloise Insane Asylum and the USS Edson 3 times....all overnight paranormal investigations. I'm scheduled to stay over in the Waverly Hills Sanitorium on Sept 29th with just one other person. We will have the entire 5 story abandoned asylum to ourselves. To us, it's just a big science project. Do we get creeped out at times, for sure but when you get right down to it, their still just people. I was so glad to see Cassie do this reaction. I rejoined Patreon just for this full length reaction.

at the same time though don't feel bad... I covered my eyes and plugged my ears during every scene in GB2 that had Vigo lol, I was 16 when I saw the Exorcist (DO NOT WATCH IT WILL SCAR YOU) that night I slept with the lights on listening to Amy grant on CD on repeat the entire night lol I can literally tell you I have watch the exorcist a total of 6 time in my entire life and I freak out every time it is on lol. but alien I love that movie and I have seen it 50 times like I love that movie same with aliens and predator and poltergeist. movies affect people in different ways so don't feel bad, I am even a little freaked out after watching this reaction... the point is soon once you understand the fear and get "ok" with the scary stuff it becomes fun, it is still scary but it becomes more like a fun ride, yes scary but fun.... 92% scared and 2% excited vs 98%excited vs 2% scared (movie quote)

I swear I think different movies hit people differently... don't get me wrong this movie scared me the 1st time I saw it. I was freaked out... but ghostbusters 2 was the one that scared me the most as a little kid (vigo still give me the creeps to this day lol im 35 years old lol) I saw alien, predator, aliens terminator, jaws all as a little kid, same with the 1st ghost busters. I was a GB fan from 7 years old lol i had all the toys the suit everything... I was a little 8 year old ghostbuster lol.... this movie still creeps me out but... now knowing everything seeing it for the 50th time lol it grows on you it is a classic.

"Contact" would be a cool movie for her to watch. I'm not sure if many people would classify it as even moderately scary, though. I'd say it's more intriguing (especially those John Hurt scenes when Silvestri's score kicks things up a notch).

Sure people already mentioned the freakish off camera stuff that was related to these movies. Pretty crazy stories. Whats odd, is I thought it was good, but not as scary as other movies then. Scary yea, but not as a bad as some. The Clown got me when younger, I did hate that thing and anything like it for a bit afterwords. But I don't fear clowns now, as some that stays with. Side note, I did hate Amityville at the time. But I actually went with friends to the real place (film ones look about the same.) And was right there in that driveway. I got pics still. I lost a few in a phone flip, but still have a few. After we were in the front, we drove down the street across the back water way. And we got out to look at the boat house that plays a part in the Amityville story. But thats a whole different story so. Just a side story of a well known haunted place Ive been too. Was creepy, and just a weird aw feel of "wow, were right here 20 feet from the front."

There are plenty of spooky themed, while not really scary movies, out there. However, you know you’re going to have to truly terrify yourself once or twice for October. It’s terrible to say, but you’re too much fun to watch when you’re really freaked out (The Shining). Maybe you should hold off on the Horror till October.

Cassie, maybe you should avoid the horror movies. You really didn't seem to enjoy that movie. You'd probably enjoy the "suspense" genre more. Those movies are more engaging, the plots are usually better, they're not filled with pointless grossness, and more importantly...no stupid jump-scares.

Cassie, I really can't thank you enough for this reaction. Can't stop laughing since last night. The clown jump scare was priceless. This reminded me of one of the funniest comments I've read on YouTube on your reaction to Alien (1979): (“I’m hoping it's kind of like a fun alien comedy” Well, for the Alien, it is.). Keep it up, Cassie. You're the best.

Still not through the whole reaction, but I have to agree with Cassie's response to the tree attacking Robbie. It probably shouldn't have been in the movie. (And I say this as someone who grew up with this movie and watched it a million times.) It's such an outlandish escalation from what had been previously happening, and it takes away from what *should* have been the main point of concern for the audience, and that was Carol Anne being taken.
[The other thing I've always found odd about Poltergeist is that there are essentially two separate climaxes. And they FEEL entirely separate. It's not like they build off of one another. The first one ends with the main conflict being resolved - Carol Anne being returned - and we're even told that the "house is clean." So when stuff keeps happening, it's like watching some bonus alternative ending tacked onto the normal ending.]

The hands which pull the flesh off the investigator's face in the bathroom mirror were the film's producer, Steven Spielberg's.
Aaron Hawkins
2022-08-16 09:08:41 +0000 UTC
Steven Spielberg is credited as a producer and writer on this film and was often on set. Spielberg worked on this film and E.T. literally back to back. The house in this film and the house in E.T. t were filmed within 20 minutes of each location. Principal photography on Poltergeist ended in 1981, then Spielberg took a few weeks off and began work on E.T., while director Tobe Hooper spent 10 weeks in the editing room completing his initial cut. Spielberg did supervise the visual effects for both films simultaneously. Once post production work on Poltergeist began in early 1982, Spielberg was in total control. He was responsible for the final edit of the film. Spielberg's usual editor Michael Kahn edited this film while Carol Littleton edited E.T. The final sound mixes and loops, the supervision of the visual effects, and the selection of Jerry Goldsmith as the composer of the music were all supervised by Spielberg. Poltergeist and E.T. opened to theaters nationwide only a week between each other during the summer of 1982, Poltergeist on June 4th and E.T. one week later on June 11th. Spielberg later said: "If E.T. was a whisper, Poltergeist was a scream." Leave it to Spielberg to essentially make 2 classic films at the same time and have them released within a week of each other and they both were greatly praised and very successful. The man is a legend for a reason. Impressive.

Unfortunately, the young actresses who played the daughters in the movie passed away very shortly afterwards. The eldest was strangled by her boyfriend the same year Poltergeist was released. The youngest daughter, just 5 years later, had flu like symptoms and collapsed. On the way to the hospital, she suffered a heart attack and didn't recover

Things I love about this movie:
1) The parents casually smoke weed and the next morning the son clearly knows that his parents are stoners.
2) the house at the end of the movie clearly is WAY smaller than the interior house and it buts right up against the fences leaving no room for the pool they clearly dug out, and the walk ways between the fences where the dad yells at the neighbor.
3) The kids calling each other names at the kitchen table. Reminds me of the scene in ET where they’re playing D&D and Elliot calls his brother that certain name. I think Spielberg was going through a lot of that at the time.
4) The choice to not show us all the gradual things they went through for days and days but rather cutting straight to the family being sorta adapted to it. Craig T Nelson puts on SUCH a great performance here with the dark eyes and the smoking and drinking all day. Also his sweater looks SUPER comfy.
5) When the eldest daughter rolls up at the end she clearly has a hickey on her neck. This is such a specific choice and adds to the realism of the moment.
I’ve seen this movie a BUNCH of times. My mom watched it with me when I was like 10 or so. It was on DISNEY CHANNEL of all things.
But this was the first time I noticed the age difference in the parents and when you do the math he clearly got her pregnant at 16. And if she’s 32 now, he’s clearly like 40 sooooooo yeah dude was not a good dude, but stepped up.

The director controversy is interesting... From what I’ve gathered, Tobe Hooper was in over his head on this. He hadn’t directed a production of this magnitude so Spielberg had to step in and help him out... I think it’d be fair to give them both a co-director credit.... But I see Spielberg’s trademarks all over this film, so I consider it one of his own.

Just finished. Hopefully you’ve recovered, Cassie. Had Carly been there, you guys could have at least comforted each other.
One note about the director’s chair since I saw a reference to Tobe Hooper being fired above. Not the case. The general consensus is writer/producer Steven Spielberg was a near constant, active creative force on the set and in the storyboarding process but Tobe Hooper did the actual directing of the movie. Although, that said, Spielberg was quoted at one point as saying Hooper wasn’t particularly hands-on, so it fell to Spielberg to work closely with the children, etc.

I was terrified of Clowns when I was a kid. My cousins had a painting of a clown in their family-room. You had to pass through the room to go to the backyard. When I did I would stay as far from the painting as I could never taking my eyes off it. Why are there Clowns!? Is this a cruel joke on kids!

Why would anyone have a clown like that in there kids room ( do kids really like clowns? ) 2. so all this stuff happens....your daughter gets sucked into a portal and then they're all like "Oh... everything's back to normal...let me take a long bath" ?? 3. your daughter is on portal and all these paranormal things are happening but when the psychic comes the dad is rolling his eyes at her ?? Lol.. Great reaction! I know horror movies are tough for you, but they really do make for great reactions! Can’t wait for October! And there’s a lot of great, not so scary films that would make for a good reaction… Shaun of the Dead, Scream just to name a couple.
While I love a good drama or comedy, I’ve always LOVED scary movies ever since I was a kid. And I started young. In fact, I remember seeing this film when I was around 7. And as freaked out as I was, still kept coming back for more! It became a bonding experience between me and my dad. We’d go to the video store (remember those?) and go straight for the horror section. Our choices were mostly based on how awesome the front cover looked…
I love them so much, I’m actually now in the early stages of production shooting my first full length feature. Which is a combination of a found footage film and the more standard film production… hard to explain but if all goes well it will make sense in the end…… and hopefully someday you’ll do a reaction to it! Wouldn’t that be awesome!

Had to laugh at your "it's over, right?", knowing the jump scare with the clown and the skeletons were still to come (best jump scare at the Poppies is in the bag). I've always found Diane's apparent delight at discovering ghosts in her house confusing too.
Also, you said at the end "you probably can't understand this feeling". I've been watching horror movies for 30+ years. I'm rarely scared once they're over but every now and again, one will really get to me. I do know that feeling, every horror fan knows that feeling and it's (partly) why we love it. I wish more horror movies could really scare me, though I don't have to be terrified to enjoy or appreciate one either:)

I'm not that far into the reaction, but I think it's somewhat understandable that the mother would at first be fascinated by the weird events. Remember, only the audience heard the creepy music score, saw the creepy clown in the chair, saw the hand coming from the TV, etc. But from the mother's perspective, there is merely a mischievous spirit moving things in the kitchen.

I hate to say this but supposedly those skeletons popping out of the ground and swimming pool at the end were REAL skeletons and the actors didn't know. The actors that played the parents were highly pissed when they found out. The reason that real skeletons were used in the movie is because it was actually cheaper and more cost-effective than creating and using plastic ones SMH

This is one of my favourite horror movies and to be honest I’ve never found it that scary so I don’t care what anyone says to you do NOT watch the first two Conjuring films as a couple of scenes scary the crap out of me lol. Even though I think they are brilliant horror films I just don’t think you will make it through them. Also agreed about that clown why would anyone have something like that in there bedroom lol.

Saw this in the theater when I was seven. Aaaahhhh good ol' '70s and '80s parents. Of course I was scared but now I love scary movies. They're so exhilarating. You should definitely watch poltergeist 2. Your reaction to the clown attack was incredible. You should meme that scene in slow motion.

Good for you Cassie! You survived and gave us a great reaction! As I said before, this was one of my very first scary movies and I really loved it. It scared the pants off me, but it is so different from the regular slasher films. There is a loving family at the heart which makes it much easier to watch. I personally like jump scare movies over the bloody ones, they leave more to the imagination. Robert mentioned The Haunting. Now that movie really gives me the shivers! I still have trouble watching it. I am sure it isn't very scary to some, but in my mind it is so frightening. Anyway, bravo Cassie! You made it through!

HUUUUUUUUGE fan of Shaun of the Dead, but one really has to see Romero’s original Dead Trilogy to appreciate it. Also need to watch living Dead At Manchester Morgue. And, really, several other zombie films. Without those cultural touchstones, many of the references in Shaun will go COMPLETELY over the viewer’s head

Loved the reaction, Cassie!!! I had forgotten about quite a few parts to this movie and it made your reactions even better.
I know you would have killed him, but Ben should have had a bunch of pots and pans stacked up outside your room and while you were doing your outro he should have just kicked them all over. :P LOL At least it wasn't a big storm going on outside while you were watching the movie like has happened in the past. :)
Have a wonderful week!!!

I would be one who would not exactly consider this a horror movie, but maybe a supernatural suspense thriller, but I'll not argue the point. There have been scarier movies. But I was struck on this rewatch with the scenes from suburbia during the credits, and Spielberg's natural focus on suburban life, and this slice of horror bubbling up from this source must have been very important for him. The scenes of suburban life from the first 10 minutes or so of the film seem to be mirror images to his scenes from ET, giving the film the Spielbergian flavor it has.

For two other GREAT haunted house movies, catch The Haunting (the original 1963 movie not the terrible remake) and The Legend of Hell House (1973). You don't need CGI to make a great genre film - in fact it's become a crutch for bad filmmakers. Don't have an interesting story to tell or good actors to tell it? Paint the screen with CGI and 90% of the movie going public will be satisfied. Personally, I think CGI looks like some producer's idiot nephew drew all over the camera negative with his Crayolas, but to each his own. Whether it's CGI or practical effects (far superior, IMO), effects are only a tool and not the story. Also, the story for Poltergeist was written by Spielberg but the official director was Tobe Hooper, of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Eaten Alive", "The Funhouse" and "Lifeforce" fame. Several of the scenes (particularly early on) were probably filmed by Spielberg (they certainly fit his style of filmmaking) but I believe that Hooper filmed the more horrific elements that made up the middle part of the film. Accounts from those on set vary as to Spielberg's level of involvement, with some saying that Hooper directed the whole thing and others saying that Spielberg directed large portions of the movie. We'll never know.

"Now let's go get your daughter."
I think people who say "POLTERGEIST isn't a horror movie" or that it isn't even that scary have become so desensitized by more extreme horror (including me probably, though I would never say those things) that they can't really appreciate anymore how truly scary it is. I revisited it again for the first time in a while recently and it struck me that in spite of the spectacular visual effects (yes, most of which look dated now but at the time were cutting edge), the film really doesn't show us much. Consider all the scenes where they're talking about Carol Anne being in the "spectral plane" and yet we never go there ourselves (nowadays they would totally show us all that). It leaves a tremendous amount to the imagination, which Steven Spielberg has long understood is far more potent. What you *don't* see can be much scarier than what you *do.* The sound designer for this film is just as responsible for instilling fear in the audience as anybody else.
This was the first movie Spielberg ever produced with another director (the late Tobe Hooper who also gave us THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) and there is debate as to whose movie it really is. There is no denying, of course, that Spielberg's handprints are all over the final product. He wrote the story and based a lot of it on his own fears as a child (including a giant ugly tree that was outside his bedroom window and which he was afraid was going to reach in and grab him) and involves many of his signature themes (light, family, suburbia, etc). Even Zelda Rubenstein (RIP), the actress who played Tangina the psychic medium, has said that while Hooper is the official director, it's really Spielberg's vision on the screen.
This was one of my first horror movies as a kid and I still love it. A true '80s classic (there was a remake a few years back, but I never bothered with it). Smart, scary, at times funny and even, as you pointed, ultimately kind of sweet. Great score by Jerry Goldsmith too. I've been curious for you to watch it for a while and I'm glad you finally did. That was quite the reaction video (your response to the clown doll attack might be the most animated I've ever seen you), but knowing how sensitive you are, I'm proud of you for doing it (and you're right about STRANGER THINGS copying it; they copy Spielberg a lot in that show). I hope it wasn't too unpleasant an experience. Looking forward to hearing you talk about it on the podcast. Keep us posted on when that is.

This is an excellent observation. Family is a recurring theme in a lot of Spielberg's work and motherly love is a big one in this film. I was struck not too long ago how many of the prominent characters in this film are female (the daughter, the mother, the doctor, the psychic, etc) and how they're all strong. Very progressive for its time.

I think I laughed through half of this movie just at your reactions.. not because I thought they were disingenuous but because I remember my own feelings watching this and could relate. I absolutely agree that some of that bit at the end was over the top and killed a bit of the anxiety but the first 3/4 was pretty intense back in the day.

Great reaction Cassie!! I was laughing so hard. Definitely helped my bad morning. Every time I see heather o rouke it makes me sad. Such a talented little girl such a shame that she died so young. You handled this movie about as well as I thought you would 🤣🤣🤣 thanks for doing a scary one for all us horror lovers. I talked with my mom about this film a few days ago and she said something that struck me. She said as scary as poltergeist is this movie is truly just about a mothers undying love for her child. I’m not a mom so I just watched this movie from more of a horror perspective but she’s totally right. Jobeth willimas played one of the bravest movie moms ever.

Same here. Horror in general is a bit out of my comfort zone. I'm okay with creature horrors, like Jaws, especially if its fused with sci-fi like Alien or The Thing. But anything with demonic possession, ghost, poltergeists or slashers, especially if it has a lot of jump scares, are just not my thing and hate the discomfort I feel during and after watching them.
