That scene at the beginning of the movie where the "Lockheed Darkstar" Mach-10 aircraft flown by Maverick blows the roof off the guardhouse on takeoff was done by filming a real F-18 on takeoff, then digitally replacing the real plane with the Darkstar. Blowing the roof off happened for real!

2023-03-14 18:13:34 +0000 UTC@Cregg Riley is right, most of the F-18 "in cockpit" footage was filmed in an actual F-18 2-seat trainer, with the actor sitting in the back seat and the actual Navy pilot sitting in the front seat, out of sight. The actors aren't doing any of the flying, but they are going through the motions as if they were, which makes the footage really realistic. The actors underwent extensive training to condition them to the motion of the plane. Tom Cruise is already an eperienced jet pilot IRL, so easier for him. 😉
