Britt was excited as she headed downstairs for dinner. Not for what lay on the table of course, that was guaranteed to be extremely underwhelming. Rather Britt was excited that tonight was another wine night for her mom, which meant she and Steph were free to go out and get a real meal as soon as she left. Diane was looking happier than usual too, she was looking forward to wine club. With Brittany on the right track once more, thanks to the help of Carol Cox, Diane’s status with the other wine moms would be headed in an upward fashion again, at least in her mind. Unfortunately for Diane, reality was not aligned with her. Britt had probably gained a couple more pounds this past week with all of her secret snacks and meals, and Carol was already scheming how to push her little plan even further.
Blissfully unaware though, Diane headed into the night with her bottle of zinfandel in tow. The chatter of women could be heard even before Diane breached the front door, and how gleeful she was to join the social occasion. “Oh Diane, welcome dear!” Carol warmly greeted her. “So glad you could make it, I know how much of a handful you have at home.”
The social strategy game had already begun. “Oh no no, not at all. After one day over here, I can already tell she's a changed person, you have a gift.” Other conversations continued, but Diane and Carol continued to chat, with plenty of prying ears.
“Oh she’s such a lovely girl, just a little guidance is all she needs.” Carol said sweetly.
“You’re right!” Carol, not yet under the influence, but now with a glass of red in her hand. “That college of hers has just turned her loose, what are they thinking, it’s like there are no rules.”
“Well well, she is still doing quite well, I mean I must say she’s been a treat to have here. And I was even thinking we could do even more to help Britt through this troubling transitional time. As you know Wendy is a registered dietitian. I think regular check ups with her could help Britt better understand what's going on with her body.”
*Slurp* “Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that?” Diane poured a second glass as she continued to listen.
“And of course Patrice has her weekly workout class at the Y, I’m sure she’d be happy to let Britt join a class or two.” Diane was unsure about that one, she knew her daughter already hated working out, but she could probably force a class on her that was only once a week. “And this one is a bit odd, but hear me out. Danielle owns the local bakery, and would love to show Britt some real world skills down at the shop.”
This was going to take some real convincing, Britt at a bakery, that sounded like a receipt for disaster. “I don’t know Carol, I’m not sure that would be best for her. What could that possibly do to help her, I don’t want her just lounging around.”
“Oh don’t worry Diane, I have some really special projects I could use her help with.” Danielle butted in. “She’ll be a major help, I just need a couple weeks to get everything prepared.”
“Wow, I don’t know what to say, these all sound like great ideas.” Diane was a bit overwhelmed by all this information. It seemed very nice that all these women wanted to chip in and help her daughter out. Diane at first worried this would in-debt her to these women though. As she thought through it more though she saw this as an opportunity to only increase her status around these parts. Soon her star eldest daughter would have her body back, and she'd be in the good graces of some of the most influential mothers in the town. Brittany would be a better trophy daughter than she even was before, that was if Diane could see anything after all this wool was being pulled over her eyes.
With Diane taken aback, Carol helped her convey her approval. “Just say yes Diane, and we all can help your darling Brittany.”
“Y-y-yes, of course, thank you for offering all this help.” Diane agreed to everything the other wine moms had proposed, even some hours at the bakery for her pudgy daughter. Diane didn’t fully understand that one, but it seemed like a take it all sort of offer, she didn’t want to offend anyone by leaving anything out.
After all that the women enjoyed an evening of wine and gossip. Whenever Diane was outside of earshot, Carol would clue whomever she was talking to in on how the first week with Brittany was going, laughing at how much the hungry coed could put back. Later that night Diane returned home, her daughters peacefully in their rooms. Diane smiled brightly about her future for the first time in a week.
