2021 Year in Review

Hello Patron Pals and Happy 2022!

The dust has started to settle from the hubbub of December, the whirlwind promises and dreams of New Years has sifted into the reality of every day. Which means it's the perfect time to wade into my annual tradition of reflecting on the year.

Every January I like to look back on the projects, themes, and achievements for each month to see (and share with you) how much (or little) I get done in a span of time. Whether you're an aspiring illustrator, a seasoned career artist, or just interested in watching my art career change and grow, I hope you enjoy this reflection on 2021!

But first, let's peek back at the first three years of Ragonia:

What a weird combo of experiences for 2020! I wonder what that will lead to in 2021...

This year in Ragonia, I will:

•  •  •  •  •  •  •  •  •  •  •

And there it is, 2021.

If it isn't apparent, this was a year of shrinking for Ragonia.

Shrinking audience and engagement on all platforms, shrinking income and sales, shrinking creativity and motivation. It's been disheartening and alarming before simmering down to apathy.

But I'm done being apathetic and avoidant, I want to work in art, and I want to get back just a portion of the energy and confidence I had when I first started.

It's going to take some real re-shuffling, but I know it's possible. Art isn't the Wild West, it's an established field with plenty of clear cut paths you can take and industries you can find your comfortable place in. You just gotta find the spot that works for you.

I'm optimistic, I really am. I can do it. We can do it. :)

I hope you enjoyed hearing my reflections, and if it's inspired you to reflect on your own year, I'd love to hear:

Share your thoughts in the comments, and check out the reflections from your fellow patrons!

As always, buds, thanks for being part of the Ragonia Community. Through the changes, art blocks, experiments, growing and shrinking, this has truly been by favorite spot on the internet for the last four years. It's been fun, it's been support, it's been community, and it's been inspiration, and I can't wait to see what we can do together in 2022 and beyond.

We GOT this.

Sorry I missed this, Brad! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing, it sounds like you had a lot of awesome achievements last year!! So proud of you. :) The same to your 2022!

Always love reading your posts and getting a glimpse into your process and life as an artist! I know it’s been a rough go with motivation/inspiration, but from an outsider’s perspective you’re still crushing it. 💪 You definitely inspired me to kick things up a notch this year and start to hone in on my own style. Through developing my style and posting illustrations on instagram I was approached to do a small series of signs for a public art installation. It was such a fun project! And in the summer I was asked to participate in an art auction, where I produced prints and sold them for the first time. I’m still fumbling my way through having an online shop and dealing with storing stock, but I had my first sale to someone who’s name I didn’t recognize which was a really cool feeling. I’ve been feeling the winter blahs pretty hard lately, but prompting me to reflect on the year really helped bring some things into perspective. I honestly forgot those things just happened this past year hahaha. So THANKS!! Hoping your 2022 is a great year with free-er flowing inspiration, more exciting projects, and a bumper balcony crop! Cheers!!

Brad

Jennifeerrrr, thank you for your kind words. Fellow 100% human artist here, that's me. x) And thank you for the offer, we'll definitely have to talk animation and wholesale! And love love to hear your artist reflections. I so much relate to so many of these, especially the markets thing! I really feel like there's gotta be a big monetary return to make all that emotional and physical energy and TIME worth it. And I love that you learned you need a quiet space for your creation, and are MAKIN IT HAPPEN already!! Thank you for being here, Jennifer!! Pumpkin says meow to Lil' Dude, Max, Princess, and Freckles!!

Ragon! Thanks again for sharing your world with us. It's always cool to see what you're working on behind the scenes and have another artist who is human and works through her struggles. <3 Can't wait to see your super-secret fun client project when you get to share it with the world! So excited to see where you go this year, and if you want anyone to chat wholesale clients and animation with I'd happily be your gal! :) Some things I learned about my artist self this last year: -I truly need my own quiet and space to create (not a want but a NEED) -I really enjoy painting landscapes -I don't enjoy doing pet portraits as much as I used to -Markets are fun but freakin' EXHAUSTING HOLY CRAP -I get bogged down in details too much and will overwork paintings if I don't stop haha Also, thank you for sharing Pumpkin with us. She's such an adorable fluff nugget and the world needs more sunshine like her.
