Eyelids

Your eyelids were struggling to stay open, fluttering, and slowly, but inevitably, sinking downwards. All the while their words keep entering your mind. You’ve stopped hearing the specifics. But certain words, like “drowsy”, “sleepy”, and “tired” penetrate the fog in your mind.
And each word that does just serves to take you deeper. To make your eyelids a little heavier. To make your mind slow down a bit more. Before long, your eyelids are barely open. Hanging like wrights ready to slam closed. But not yet.
They want you to keep looking into their eyes. And your whole mind is focused just on keeping your eyes open by now. So much energy going into keeping them up, until, finally, they tell you to close them, and they shut, travelling downwards, and taking your mind with them.
