Originally I wrote that Sadie was put off/in disbelief because Lars is in denial of what's happening right now, but he's also denying "Island Adventure" ever happened.
Here, Sadie doesn't understand: is he fucking with me or does he really not remember?
And the fact would have been: he doesn't remember. He has a vague notion that something happened, but the experience was so traumatic-- he's outright lost it from his mind.
This is why I originally drew a visual parallel to a scene in Prince of Egypt, where someone reacts to someone they love saying something completely unbelievable/surreal.

omg, so Prince of Egypt really WAS inspiration from that backing away moment! I always joked to myself that it was but it's so cool knowing that was intentional (I LOVE The Prince of Egypt)
