Hey Laowinners!

I posted this the other day on social media, and wanted to give some perspective on it.

There is a notion that asian countries tend to be more chauvinist than western countries. The idea is that the man goes to work, makes the money, and the woman is the house wife, who waits for her husbands return, and can expect him to get up to unsavory activities in the name of business trips, making connections, or to solidify friendships with other males.

Of course, this is a massive stereotype and generalization, but the traditional gender roles of asian couples are typically more pronounced in east Asia.

In the picture you will see the top image, South Korea, as a place where a man will treat his significant other well in public, and abuse them at home.

"Domestic violence in South Korea is seen as a private matter and not something the law enforcement should deal with,[1] the rate of second convictions has increased from 7.5% (2008) to 32.2% in 2012"

This notion is true for China as well. Martial problems are private, and should be dealt with in a private manner. However, in China, you will see a lot more public arguments, particularly from women who didn't get their way, which you can see in the bottom picture, with the roles reversed, and the woman beating the man both in public, and at home.

With a women who has dated or married a man for his possessions, status, or money, they have less face to lose if they were to confront the man in public. Public shaming is a common tactic in China, which is a face based society. If one loses face in public, one is almost beholden to the other to make the humiliating experience stop.

Unfortunately, the truth is that spousal abuse is also pretty rampant in China, also from the man as the perpetrator and the woman as the victim. I've seen it multiple times, and had to call the police on 2 neighbors since 2009. In terms of public abuse, it's almost always the woman screaming or slapping the man.

Funnily enough, this meme also addresses Japan, where it is seen as highly embarrassing to show affection to your wife/girlfriend in public. This is probably due to the rigid social structure of Japan, and public display of anything is considered rude.

The stereotype often held of Japanese women in China is that they patiently wait at the table side for their husband to come home, and pour their beer while kneeling and listening to their day.

As ridiculous as this sounds, I have seen it, and friends have confirmed that this often is the case. It creates this mystique about Japanese women, that they are both subservient and attentive.

Taiwan is portrayed as well adjusted in public and at home, and I can confirm after living there over 1 year, I never heard of one conflict in public or by any neighbors within listening distance.

Overall, the conversation about gender roles, marital abuse, and the way men and women behave in public continues. In the sphere of the asian internet, you will often see jokes, or articles of this nature, so I figured I'd share with you guys, as it is very much a talked about issue in asian society.

Thanks so much for your support!!!

I believe a lot Taiwanese men abuse women at home, hearing from some of the Taiwanese women first hand

Amongst 1,3 billion people there will be an example for anything you want to prove, but this article that I found early on in my relationship with my Chinese wife is pretty good, at least for me... https://www.chinalovematch.net/magazinearticle.aspx?urlname=Never-Marry-A-Chinese-Woman
