Attack on Titan 3x17 "Hero" reaction & review

Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of season 3, episode 17.   Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could have prepared me for this ep.  To be honest, I went in all ready for Smith to die, which I was bummed about, but the stage had been set so well, it made sense.
We had some epic moments along the way, like Levi really cutting Beast Titan down to size, and then.....my sweet boy gets his strategy back....only to say he's no "hero"....and then....!!!!!!
I don't want to overstate it, but this may have been my most emotional reaction to an AoT ep!  Fun fact: I couldn't hear the word "steam" after seeing this episode without being triggered with panic and sadness :(  ALSO: I'd like to go on record about something I said in my outro that was SPOT ON, like DANG, how did I figure that out lol?!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Attack on Titan 3x17 "Hero" reaction & review

Comments

Haha thank you!!!!!! I was so devastated waiting between this ep and the next!!!! :'(

Melissa Moore

Wow I knew you adored armin... but wow that crying was just wow.. you poor girl.. well at least it's only for another episode lol

Navod Wijesekara

Oh man, yes I totally get it now haha!! Ohhh no kidding! That's a fun little fact!

Melissa Moore

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

now do you know why i couldn't wait? Fun fact, after the cart titan grabs the beast titan the first two titans to attack levi i believe are cameos from eren and mikasas voice actors.

Adam Stinnett

Now that's a reaction

Ivan Hundric

I can definitely see why, it's such a shocking set of events!!! Awww so glad you enjoyed my reaction, even if it did take you by surprise!!!! Thanks for clearing that up about Smith, I think it does become more evident in future eps, but I couldn't quite tell what happened here! Hmmm, interesting that you got a glimpse at who the Beast Titan might be...!!! The parallels between Smith and Armin are great too, and I love how they carry that onto the next ep. My next reaction will be emotion-filled as well so get ready haha!!!! Thank you again so much!

Melissa Moore

Awww thank you! He did/does....he has probably been my fave character from pretty early on in the show! :( I can totally see why you were in shock after seeing this one the first time! I was definitely in shock right up until the end, and then my eyes also suffered a water main burst hahaha. Thank you so much for watching and for letting me know how you liked my reaction! :D

Melissa Moore

I didn't know what to do with myself the first time I watched this episode. It left me with an empty feeling after seeing what happened to Armin.... I was not prepared for your reaction XD Though we didn't see Smith die, I think he did get hit. I think a piece of boulder hit him in the side. I could be wrong though. One of my favorite parts of this episode is how they do a really good job of mirroring and showing the parallels between Smith and Armin. (I also got a brief thought as to who the Beast Titan could be. I'm probably so wrong though. But it could be interesting.) The next ep is going to be an intense ride! Can't wait for the next reaction!!!

Alex R

Oh man your reaction was heart breaking. I could really tell Armin meant a lot to you. There were no tears from me on this episode when I first watched it. I was too much in disbelief and shock. Seeing your reaction though burst the water mains in my eyes. lol

Jacob Ramirez

Awwww thank you!!! I hope you got a lot out of it! It was a whirlwind in this episode, wasn't it?! So glad you liked my analysis!!! Haha I get lucky once in a while and actually guess some things :P Thank you so much for your kind words!!!!!!!! It really means a lot!!!!!!! ^_^

Melissa Moore

ur reaction broke my heart :( , but we all felt that combination of excitement, sadness and vindication in the last minutes of this episode. I love ur analysis as well. u really hit all the major points.... most of the time :P Keep up the good work

Ahmed Alnajar

Thank you so much!!! I think I was still trying to figure out what was going on when he was getting burnt :O Then it hit me at the end! So true that nothing here is some kind of ratings-driven plot device, it's all the result of carefully laid out writing and character building that took years! Awwwww thank you so much for letting me know that you love my reactions!!!!!!!!!!! :D That makes me very happy!!!! Hope you love my next ones too!!!! ^_^

Melissa Moore

So true about the setup for this battle and the terrible solution that it took to win it! I think you have a point there that a huge lead-up to the deaths wouldn't have had the same jarring effect. I can see why you love these eps, they are AMAZING!!!! Hope you love my next reactions too!!!!

Melissa Moore

It's a tearjerker for sure! Yes, so true about their friendship! And how beautiful that in such a "cruel world", the most genuine of friendships can blossom!

Melissa Moore

D': D': D':

Melissa Moore

Awwww hahaha sorry!!! This one really kicks us when we're down for sure, but we do have the fun epic Levi moment in there lol. And yeah, they got the Titans, so yay.....?!?! Lol! I'm so happy to hear that, thank you!!!!! I think it's the saddest and most upset I've ever been during a reaction!!!!!!!! :P

Melissa Moore

HAHAHAHA you know what I was just thinking? That you guys ROCKED IT when it came to not spoiling, not even HINTING, at what was coming....I never, ever ever in a million years saw it coming thanks to that! But I'm sure you were all dying when I was cooing over Armin for the last 3 seasons hahahaha!!!!!!! Oh man, my heart still hurts from this ep!!!

Melissa Moore

I agree!!!! I can't wait to go back and edit this one, I'm sure it's full of details! Oh gawd, I actually had forgotten that line from Marlow to Jean but you're so right. :( Oh dang!!!! I didn't notice that about her sitting by the window or the flowers!!! I get your comment from way back when now!!! How sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :'( That is very cool about Sasha remembering Mikasa's words!!! Good call! OH MY LORD, that is insane about the release date!!!! Thanks for the info on Smith, I have seen the next ep now so I'm a little clearer on what happened, but thank you for sharing the image!!! It does help to not have it flash by so fast haha. Poor horsie though! Man, this was quite an ep! Thank you for your comment, it was really informative!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Melissa Moore

I completely relate to your reaction Melissa. Though you cried at the end and I did while he was getting burnt. I cried just as hard as you did for Armin. This season is the fruit of beautifully written, well-thought story with great characters, it just elevates and gets elevated by season 1 and 2. No nonsense events for the sake of "shocking the fans" that are out of place/character but a natural progression. Everything is connected and well-written yet remains equally unpredictable. There are real consequences to actions characters take. Add to that the absolute phenomenal soundtrack of this anime... Great reaction, I don't write here often but, have been watching all of your Attack on Titan reactions and love them <3 Looking forward to next episodes as always!

Perfect Game creates one of my all-time favourite unwinnable situations I've seen in fiction. The Beast Titan is attacking from an invincible position, tactically speaking: one in which he doesn't need to even expose himself to danger while being able to deal massive damage in return; the Colossal Titan is... the Colossal TItan and even finding a way to deal with him is a real challenge; Eren gets knocked the Hell out and is for all we know, out of the fight; oh, and the cherry on top: Reiner is back up. It actually makes me wonder if the title of the episode was meant to be a double entendre. Half just a baseball reference, and half an analogy for this battle plan Zeke had drawn up. It really feels like he thought very hard about how to win this fight with zero casualties on his side. A "Perfect Game", so to speak. The solution to the unwinnable situation in Hero is a great payoff, and none of the plans are executed without casualties. Though to be fair, Sasha's casualty was caused by an error, as opposed to Armin and Erwin's, where sacrifice was built into the plans. From a plot standpoint, it's a good callback to the phrase about how if you aren't willing to sacrifice something, you can't gain anything. From a writing standpoint, I appreciated the commitment to death having real meaning, since nothing annoys me more than a drawn out, sad lead up to a "death", only for the character to be fine without some damn good reasoning as to why. Anyway, I love this pair of episodes if you can't tell! Can't wait for next week!

My tears flow no matter how many times I watch this episode. One of the greatest things about this story is how much Eren & Mikasa, love & respect Armin. It is beautiful to have friends like that:)

I'm with NFM NFM here, I KNEW I shouldn't have eat during this episode, I KNEW it ! This one don't let you rest, it just keeps going, and keeps punching you in the guts, raaah ! It started so good tho (kinda). A real mix of greatness (Leviiiii) and utter saddness... But as you said in your intro, they did took out the armored and colossal titan ! But at what cost... Thanks for the reaction ! I think this was your "greatest" breakdown :) :(

This whole series, you’ve been talking about how Armin is your favorite, and I’ve just been sitting here like “oh s***”

Jaeger

This episode is just PEAK Attack on Titan, and yet the next one is equally emotionally draining. There's so many cool details to this episode I'm noticing in retrospect that are sad Marlowe thinking about Hitch in his last moments, his thoughts show you just how scary what they are doing is, literally riding into death. Remember back the scene when he talks to Jean about how as a new recruit he should be on the front lines and he is willing to sacrifice himself to change the state of humanity, but in the end he was terrified and could only think about Hitch speaking of Hitch, how sad is it that he imagines her sleeping in bed, but later in the episode when Armin is telling Eren the plan, we get a flash of Hitch sitting by the window. she wasn't sleeping, she was awake because she was waiting for him to return... to make it even sadder, the flowers on her windowsill are blue/purple anemones, which represent forsaken love, death, anticipation and waiting, which is exactly what she was doing... this is why I left that comment back in the Uprising arc about Hitch's feelings haha, I was just realising how obvious it was and this moment makes it even sadder. even the minor characters in this show get you... another thing, I just remembered Sasha saying against Reiner "if we don't fight, we can't win!" is exactly what Mikasa said to the cadets back in S1 when she was 'motivating' them to fight the Titans, after she had lost Eren, passing on his philosophy to them. just thought it was a cool detail that Sasha remembered those words Levi taking out Zeke was a great moment, and of course Armin's sacrifice was perfect. but I figured that I would talk about the stuff not many other people will mention. OH FUN FACT. I just remembered omg this is hilarious. so the manga chapter which covered the second half of this episode and Armin's sacrifice was released ON WORLD OCEANS DAY. not just that, but ON NATIONAL BEST FRIEND'S DAY. so to pump the irony and the despair up to 1000, yeah it was a funny mix of emotions when I read it and realised that Eren lost his best friend, who he wanted to see the ocean with... I forgot about that fact until now lol. you've seen the next episode already so you probably know but Erwin was hit in the stomach with a boulder, it shot through his horse. here's the manga panel if you want to see, it's in black and white so it's not that gorey but I feel bad for the horsie: https://i.imgur.com/IUuvdnb.jpg (by the way so yeah the first half of this episode was from the chapter called "Promise" and the second half was from the chapter called "Hero"). wow this is probably the longest comment I've done haha but hopefully something in here was interesting

I know!!!! I dropped the ball on the tissues this time haha. Ohhhhhhh you were so right to worry, I don't mean to downplay how much I care for other characters on this show but I found myself thinking in the days to come, "why did it have to be Armin?! Anyone but Armin, please!!!" :P I've seen the next ep now and it was amazing, hope you love my reaction to it! Couldn't have said it better myself - it truly is a masterpiece!

Melissa Moore

I had heard about this being the highest rated episode, had not heard the part of GoT fans though haha! I agree that 18 is really special as well! I hope you love my reaction to that too; couldn't agree more about how well it's carried out!!!!!!!

Melissa Moore

:'D I hear you!

Melissa Moore

Hahaha sorry to make you cry through lunch but hope you had fun while doing it haha! Gotcha, I think someone pointed it out last ep but I still need to go rewatch. It was hard to tell in that quick moment (for me, at least)! Thanks for clearing it up!

Melissa Moore

We already told you to bring tissues! I was so worried for you because you are so attached to Armin recently that this episode will make you so emotional. 😅 So much has happened in one episode. The music, animation, sequences, story, directing and emotion portrayed is absolutely spectacular. You'll be seeing more outstanding emotions and dialogues on the next episode! Attack on Titan is a masterpiece.

Czar

Also, since I know you’ve seen the next episode, I’ll say this. This episode is the highest rated of the show (actually of any show, including GoT, when it first came out. Though I heard fans of GoT downvoted it to dethrone it. Take that with a grain of salt, but it wouldn’t surprise me), I think 18 is my favorite. Hero is beautiful and wonderfully directed, but so is Midnight Sun, and it makes you feel SO MANY things with nearly zero background music. I really love it.

Fizzle

‘Sayonara, sekai’ ‘Goodbye world’ The first line of that song always gets me man.

Fizzle

btw yeah, Erwin got hit by a boulder, it wasn't his horse, dunno if you rewatched the scene

NFM NFM

As always, it's a pleasure having lunch while my face is all tears

NFM NFM

Yeah I can definitely see why!!! And I see what you mean about Beast Titan, it certainly must have been a huge surprise and a huge blow to the ego to be taking down so swiftly by someone who clearly can kick some Titan butt haha.

Melissa Moore

This is currently the highest rated attack on titan episode ever. Well deserved. I always kind of feel sorryfor the beast titan. Imagine you think you're this big shot titan who can trample people without consequnces. and then ur first encounter with a group of people who specialize in taking down titans includes Levi. Beast titan was always a few steps behind cause he isn't used to fighting enemies that can have a stratergy to fight his titan.

Aadit Doshi

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA omg!!!! That was a masterpiece! Thank you, glad you enjoyed my reaction!!! Seriously, yall are lucky I've seen the next ep or these comments would have probably put me in a coma!!!!!!! T_T LOL :P

Melissa Moore

Guess things are really heating up. But we still have so many burning questions left unanswered. Still, this season is fire. I just hope you don’t burn-out before the end. Nice to see you still have a small flame of hope in you after all this series has thrown your way though. And props to Eren doing his part of the plan rather than just blowing steam as usual. Anyway, awesome reaction! I’m gonna shoot off. I’m due for a barbecue later 🔥

Liam Bracken

Hahahaha noooooo too sooooonnn!!!! T_T LOL!

Melissa Moore

Things got heated this episode. Armin needs to learn to cool off a bit.
