The 101st and 82nd had mis-drops all over on D-Day. You can watch Saving Private Ryan or an old John Wayne flick The Longest Day for more of that story too. Germans didn't know exactly when the invasion was coming, but they had put up plenty of defenses. AA batteries were all over France and they had radar and coastal sightings of the planes in coming. Also, the airdrops were done at full moon, otherwise it would have been pitch black. And sometimes they didn't have the resources to take and hold prisoners, so there may have been orders to take no prisoners...maybe.
