We literally sang the words Skeet Skeet and would sing My Neck, My Back. My brain rotted just as much on old doll making websites and watching old Dawson Creek reruns. I actually think today’s kids are smarter and can process more information than we can. I have seen plenty of people say kids can’t read but can their parents? Kids probably aren’t reading as many books but honestly I think they just live in 2x speed lol I swear being bored all the time like we were as kids actually just allows neurons to die off just like lonely old people. I’m sure there’s some kinda balance but I think we might just be unable to fairly assess this bc we’re now the adults who can’t keep up.

I have an autistic cousin, he is somewhat verbal but for the most part only speaks to his iPad and rarely responds when spoken to. He’s maybe 9 now and I don’t see him often but when I do at family functions he is ALWAYS on his giant rubber cased iPad. The last time I saw him I tried to talk to him and ask him some basic questions, how old is he, what’s his favorite color, etc. and he was mostly ignoring me until he suddenly burst out “SMOKE WEED EVERYDAY.” I was gagged and his sister just said oh yeah he learned that from YouTube. From sonic the hedgehog to snoop dog, the play next feature will take an iPad baby crazy places.

Thanks to Reagan (take a shot) big bird was planned to be in the rocket and would give educational lessons in space. unfortunately they went with a school teacher instead who passed away in the explosion. but just imagine a world where big birds death was live streamed to all of america. like they couldn’t just revive big bird after that?? or would they just be like haha big bird just flew out before the explosion.

I can't claim to know how hard parenting is and I don't want to judge iPad parents, but I'm also always thinking like ... why is the iPad a NEED if it's something so new? Babies and toddlers are naturally curious and can be engaged by any random thing in the world for hours. I'm 24 and grew up with very very limited access to the early internet until I was in elementary/middle school, and I always remember just finding something random to play with if I was bored when I was little

2024-10-11 21:40:53 +0000 UTCThe difficulty with problem-solving and the need for instant gratification is such a huge point. I used to work as a Pre-K classroom aide and a K-8 substitute teacher/after-school teacher and that was by farrrr the biggest clue that a kid had a lot of screen time at home. To my knowledge, I didn't have any kids who were 100% screen-free (ironically I worked at a very wealthy private school and I think that was why- older kids had school-issued iPads, and having technology in the home was definitely a status thing/just a general expectation for the families), but there was a big divide between kids whose parents monitored their screen use and those who didn't. For the younger kids, I'd see students who struggled to solve tactile/3-dimensional problems- like they'd be building something with blocks, not be able to get a block to sit right, and not have any instinct to turn the block around and try stacking it a different way. Most kids, especially middle schoolers, would ask for help without trying to solve a problem on their own first, so I'd always tell them that they had to come up with and try one solution before asking me. Most kids were annoyed but could do it without an issue, but some kids could not understand how to try to solve a problem on their own- it wasn't that they tried and couldn't do it, they literally struggled with the concept of having to do it themselves. I also, as a sub, had to walk 7th graders through how to find reliable sources online. Almost 90% of them thought that typing a question into Google, looking at the AI blurb at the top, and then citing "Google" counted as a citation. I walked them through the importance of clicking on a link, analyzing what kind of site the information came from, and how to understand the information they were looking at in the context of the rest of the website. They said their teachers hadn't taught them that because they already knew how to use the Internet. The "digital native" thing is scary on so many levels. Just because kids are used to screens doesn't mean they're born with any of the problem-solving or critical thinking skills that are necessary online or in real life.

Often adults aren't even equipped to teach children to emotionally regulate and I think it's about time that there are other ways to learn such valuable skills!

Wonderful episode, very relevant to me as my baby just turned one and we’re starting to see some typical “less desirable” characteristics of a baby-toddler. My fiancé and I don’t own iPads, and we simply won’t be buying one for our daughter because well, we don’t care for them?? And if we don’t need them, neither does she! Babies are naturally intrigued by the world and curious about everything. Use this to your advantage!! We’ve never plopped her in front of the TV, instead we give her toys (duh), bring her along for our tasks (babies even find chores exciting), sing songs to her, damn we even let her explore the cupboards and the pantry. And sometimes we just sit in silence because I don’t need to be a silly song machine 100% of the time. And that’s okay! She naturally has a wonderful temperament and that probably helps us more than we know, but everyone we encounter who meets her comments on how engaged she is with the world around her, how much of a social butterfly she is, and how adaptable she can be in different/new situations. It’s fully possible to be a two parent working household with no ipad/TV and not lose your sanity I promise lol

It’s a sesame st show specifically developed for Syrian refugee children to help teach social emotional skills for children in conflict settings. I’m a student at the Harvard graduate school of education and we’ve done a lot of work with them. Akili network is doing some cool similar educational TV things in Kenya

Excessive screentime hindering improvement of social skill development or the development of some symptoms of autism is not the same as what this quote insinuates. There is a dangerous (and shockingly present) *false* rhetoric of various environmental ‘causes’ of autism which is harmful! Would love for this topic to be handled and discussed in a more nuanced way. It is a delicate line how we discuss topics like this one when lots of people hold harmful beliefs about factors that “cause” autism.

2024-10-10 12:02:18 +0000 UTCmost relevant ep to me ever (former ipad kid, cousins r all ipad kids, currently works with ipad kids) one thing i wld note is that I feel the conversation is still stuck on the babies and "who knows how they will turn out in 20 years?!???" but those early ipad kids have grown up to become teenagers (or even young adults like moi) and though I can't do work without background noise (like youtube or music or sth) I've deleted most social media and basically can't use IG for more than a week without feeling sick and deleting it LOL. I was a stereotypical ipad kid from arnd 5 till 12, experienced very stereotypical consequences of being online at such a young age, but then I grew up. My relationship with technology and how it's impacted my life is another thing I have to work through, but I'm able to live. I wish there was an attempt by you guys to actually answer the question of what the extent of the damage is for ipad kids beyond the fearmongering. You're right when you say the ipad delays the important lesson of feeling bored, but that is a lesson they will still grapple with, as you've acknowledged, when they go out in the real world, AND is a lesson many non-ipad kid adults have to learn with facebook/ig reels addiction etc... Yes I wish I wasn't raised with an Ipad, and I think I wld b a more well adjusted person without it. Idk, I guess I just dislike how you guys don't reach any sort of conclusion, just citing examples of kids trying to zoom in irl and implying that these children are doomed to become brainless unthinking creatures, when in reality they are going to grow into adults just like us. Also as someone who loved creepypasta youtube videos I've got a bone to pick w that creepypasta statement. I teach an afterschool program for kids age 3-5 and I'm not being hyperbolic when I say some children act truly feral they're away from their screens. My boss who is a child ed specialist says that since the pandemic a lot of kids' behaviours reflect that of addiction/dopamine dependency, so when they're at school or otherwise not on the iPad they are literally in a state of withdrawal, and as the adult supervising them I can attest to their absent-mindedness, aggression, restlessness, and eagerness to touch my phone with their sticky fingers. Ik I sound so dramatic and these are also TYPICAL early child behaviours, but they have become magnified in recent years due to the rise in iPad usage. Also Jia Tolentino's piece for the New Yorker about Cocomelon was great I recommend!!!

So we workshopped stuff to do w/ her that didn’t involve an iPad, she had limited tv/computer time as well. some of my fav memories of that era of my life involved swinging outside with their kid while she told me the tea on all of her 2nd grade friends, or making up dance routines to her favorite songs. Saw her a few years ago and she turned into a really well-spoken, outgoing teen…hard not to feel like the two things are related!!

I’ve found that they were given access to technology much younger than i was bc newer and better technology was more available within just two or three years.

2024-10-09 20:09:07 +0000 UTCMy 4 year old daughter was gifted an iPad by the in-laws when she was 3( 🙄) we let her play on it since it was a gift and it turned into a full blown addiction within just a few days. I began weaning what she could do on it - no shows, only specific games and not paying to unlock all the games. That helped a decent amount but we noticed her emotional state and behavior with how she talked to people declined so much within about 15 min of being on the iPad. I ended up putting it out of sight and when she asked just told her that it’s not helping her brain and not good for her so we can play with toys/books/puzzles instead. Within truly 2 days we had our kind, curious, silly, and friendly daughter back. It was such a drastic change. I’ll never go back to the iPad and won’t get her a smartphone for as long as possible. It also spurred us to examine how we use our phones and got rid of IG, twitter, and Facebook. We can’t expect kids to not be iPad babies when we are iPad parents. All of us feel more emotionally stable, connected, and are doing more hobbies and activities together.

I got rid of my tv right before my baby was born and refuse to watch videos in his presence Out scroll mindlessly while he's awake and my family made fun of me and the only night i ever let them babysit, they stuck him (at 4 months old!) in front of the tv so they could watch a soccer game 😤 I don't understand how WE are the ones who are more intentional about these things

My baby is content to stare at a wall for like 30 minutes at a time lol and fussiness can be fixed with a little walk around the block most times. I also liked the email about doing the difficult part now. Like, just go ahead and teach your children to sit and be patient and then you dont even need all the interventions as they age... but also yes the systemic issues made this hard!

I am a digital native, but I think the difference between my generation & iPad babies is that we had to use a desktop. My boyfriend & I have discussed this extensively as we both work in IT now but the kids who grew up with iPhones/iPads do not know how to operate a desktop or troubleshoot a computer! I’ve met some that can’t even type on a keyboard! The user interface of Apple products is designed to be as streamlined and easy as possible. I spent sooo much of my childhood on the family PC desktop computer, but I learned how a computer works, how to file share, I learned HTML from decorating my MySpace page, I learned how to convert files from downloading stuff on limewire. I was literally pirating & file-sharing when I was like 12. These skills did transfer over into my adult life! But yes, I have been addicted to my phone/the computer basically all of my life & have given up on the idea of being free of it lol

I genuinely believe that I wouldn't be as well rounded of a person if I didn't have both the education and exposure to different cultures through the show. Yes, TV is bad, but like y'all said, kids are going to watch it anyway. And as a kid with a single working parent in a place with severely lacking education, Sesame Street was an incredible resource. 2024-10-09 16:41:03 +0000 UTCMy son just turned 1 and this is a little off topic to the ep, but EVERYONE got him a light up noisy toy except maybe 2 people, and a therapist at Mommy and Me told us that light up toys that make noise are pretty passive and don’t require a ton of imagination and “boredom busting” thoughts and actions from babies/kids. If you’re getting a gift for a baby or young child, get something that doesn’t light up and make noise!!! The parents will thank you and the kid will engage longer and more creatively

I grew up without a tv til high school-ish and thank god. i might not get SpongeBob references but the amount of reading, outdoor and imaginative play, and interaction i had more than made up for that. 2. Seeing my baby (21 years old) brother and the ways constant phone presence has ruined his social skills and drawn him into the Andrew Tate world breaks my heart. We were raised so not in that world (two hippy parents all about love and feminism and peace and respect yada yada) and it’s genuinely just the ways social media preys on teen boys. 3. I have nannied off and on for years and i feel very strongly that kids NEED to be bored. They need to go on errands with their parents, wait in line, learn to interact with people different from them (adults, others kids, what have you), and kids who get plopped at home with a babysitter while parents do “adult things” like errands or sit in line on their parents phones have way less impulse control and patience and resilience in my experience.

2024-10-09 11:43:03 +0000 UTCOkay so I’ve been living in a rural village in Lesotho without electricity for the past two years and I interact everyday with my host niece and nephew, three and four respectively. And while there’s still many challenges in terms of the education system here I feel like these kids brains are so much more developed than American iPad children. I think it’s going to be super interesting over the next 20 years or so to see how the world order may shift as American iPad kids grow up at the same time as “free range” children in less tech driven areas. I’m so impressed by the intelligence and creativity of these kids and how they can truly entertain themselves with anything compared to children that simply cannot function without an ipad. That being said I heard them singing baby shark yesterday so they may be at risk yet haha

2024-10-09 06:25:12 +0000 UTChi! i am a nanny in nyc and i have found that the families i nanny for (from a kind of wide range of socioeconomic circumstance) are pretty intentional around screentime. 2 families are totally screen free, but one of the families has an interesting approach. betty jane (the baby) is allowed to play on the phone but can not consume "rich media," basically anything with bright fast moving images that move. no games, no cartoons, and no short online videos. but he said that if i need a break i can turn on a movie with real people that is realistic and slowish moving or she can play with my phone camera. i havent felt the need to use that (shes a very sweet happy go lucky baby and is easy to distract) but i appreciate their nuanced approach that is focused on the level of brain stimulation.
