Stationmaster 2
Added 2021-07-19 19:37:37 +0000 UTCI don't think I need to wait very long. The response to the poll was pretty overwhelming.
I have quite a bit more thinking to do, but I've been sketching out some design, and come up with the basic path I want to follow. This is the time to make major changes, so if you have any feedback on core stuff you think could be improved on, this would be a great place to leave it.
So far, the big core design changes I'm planning are:
- Scrap the old character engine and use the one from Exalted. This is slightly less flexible, but the models and animations are much better. This should resolve a ton of issues, though clothes, gender overhaul, and furries probably won't be in 0.1.
- Decouple animations from macro. This should save a lot on performance and allow stuff like multiple floors (think Startopia). It might even unlock enough performance for VR to become viable (that requires a lot more UI thought though, and I still have to work out if it's worth it to start with that in mind).
- Time controls.
- More detailed army management. Make armies have positions around planets, and handle opposing factions' armies as armies, not events.
- For the nerds: Ditch that piece of shit ASCII save system in favor of SQLite (or maybe JSON).
- There needs to be a bigger distinction between "Harem" characters and "Station" characters, with the former getting much more development. I'm still thinking about what this would look like, but my gut tells me that the biggest writing focus should be on more detailed personalities and training for the few you care the most about. AIDungeon has taught me a lot about how to do this well, and while SM2 probably won't have direct access to GPT-3, I can definitely use it to pump out a lot of events.
Things I think should stay the same are:
- The tone of the game, the main character, and the universe it is set in (but not the other characters).
- The construction and management-centric UI. Although it will be gaining floors (and losing the pillar), the moment-to-moment gameplay should look about the same. I won't be making the player's environment a core part of the gameplay anymore. It seemed like a good idea in theory, but didn't work well for QPQ or Exalted.
- The core gameplay loops around station building and conquest.
- Random events and furniture items (with some content edits for things I've learned about writing since then), though I plan to write new faction leaders and "main quest" events.

Stationmaster is already a great game and I‘m happy to see you are going to build an even better Stationmaster now. I also like the character customization of NPCs a lot. Especially when I select girls to join into my bedroom I don‘t want them to look all the same. (the more detailed the better) I like all kind of women - large and small with skinny and also with a clumsy appearance. With many NPCs on my station, I need a lot of possibilities to modify them :-) Walking through my station in first person view would be great. (some of my favorite games are still the old „Dungeon Keepers“) And a nicer bedroom and living area for the master would be great :-) (the old one always looks so dark) Improving animations is also very important. I had scenes with other faction leaders for example where I was only able to see a giant triangle from the animation or a net of strange and huge lines on my screen. (my computer is not old and grumpy - it‘s a quite actual I7 with top level graphics board, 32 GB of RAM and overall hand selected and very good hardware and drivers usually on actual level ;-) I don‘t want to confuse you with too many ideas. There have been too many games never really finished because of too many ideas that could finally not be realized. Keep up the good work. And anyway, thanks again for starting with Stationmaster 2.

I ask because the new character engine works on broader shapes, which makes characters look better at the expense of losing a little of the fine control from before. There are still some specific sliders like breast size, fat, etc, but things like nose bridge shape don't exist right now. They've been replaced by a smaller set of "Face type 1 amount"-like sliders.

2021-07-20 13:36:37 +0000 UTCSeriously have always loved your work. Stationmaster is a gem. One thing I would like to see is more content related to the slaves/harem/npcs. A larger portion of available scenes tied to specific personality traits so that NPCs feel a little more unique. You have a very solid formula for your games, Stationmaster is one of my all time favorites. Exalted, while I don't enjoy the setting nearly as much, I still come back to it time and again because of how well you do it. I confess, the thought of more Stationmaster pleases me a great deal.

Stationmaster had to be played in a lowered resolution window because when in fullscreen most of the data i needed was below the bottom of the screen with no way to scroll it up. Also, If at all possible, can the vat slaves be dealt with just like picking up slaves from the planets or events?
