It's a brilliant twist. Originally, we were led to believe that Ichigo acquired Hollow powers when he was awakening his Soul Reaper powers. Both being Zangetsu, the fandom refers to the hollow/soul reaper powers as "White" while his Quincy powers as "Old Man" During the struggle for the Final Getsuga Tenshou they both merged and stating that "they were his power" and that was true. It's as you said, right from the beginning White never spoke a lie to him, calling him partner during the battle against Kenpachi, saying he's Zangetsu. If you go to read the manga panel, while White is wearing his usual smirk, reflected in his sword is a frown as Ichigo never recognized him. And as the Old Man stated to each, "When two who fight together but do not trust each other, they only diminish the other". Quite ironic, Ichigo always refused his Hollow. Reflecting on all that has happened, who do you think truly had Ichigo's best interests at heart? Yes, White tried to overtake Ichigo at several points but in his mind, he was always protecting Ichigo himself and his raw desire like Orihime. The Old Man, meanwhile, held him back also in a desire to protect him, and he did use Blut Vene to halt bleeding during the Kenpachi fight, but was his methods right? Also, during the Bankai training, Old Man explicitly stated, "You must find the *true* Zangetsu and defeat me with it".
