Shiny New Features for v0.8.0

So I'm pretty excited about this one.

Turn with me to page 142 of our holy DMG. Here we have two pages to provide a small bit of brain fodder for making a magic item more than just a magic item. Take a magic item and give it a special property.

That's not a simple +1 Longsword. It's clearly of elf-make, with a leaf in the pommel that leads to a vine that wraps the handle and extends into the blade itself, finely engraved to the very tip.

With small details like these (even those without mechanical benefits), PCs can attach themselves more to a particular item and the players can feel more immersed in the world.

The trick, though, is remembering to roll something like that, and then keep up with it when they go "Oh, man, I really want that +2 flail crafted by giants that can always tell which direction is north, but I can't afford it now. We'll be back." Then, two months later, your player says, "Hey, remember that compass flail at Jim's Fine Weapons?"

It's fun, but it's one more thing to roll. One more thing to keep track of. Like you don't have enough to do.

Thankfully, 5eMagic's got your back. Picture the scene:

Player: "So, I'm looking at this list. There's a cloak of protection. What can you tell me about it?"

DM, as Shopkeep: "Oh, she's a fine piece there. She'll keep ye safer from all kinds of ailments and protect ye in combat to boot!"
DM: "It's essentially +1 to AC and saving throws."

Player: "Anything special about it?"

DM, internally: Um, it's just a cloak of protection. Just buy it already.
DM: "Well..." *click, read, shake head, click, read, satisfied nod, save*
DM, as Shopkeep: "The lass who sold it to me told a tale, but ye may not believe it. She says it be used by a man who slew hundreds of bugbears in dozens of tribes, and they still recognize the symbol on the back. Mayhap ye'd avoid a fight er two with it on ye back. Er mayhap ye'd find a new enemy. And mayhap she be tellin' tales as she pawned her husband's equipment. Believe what ye will..."
DM: "Also, you can refresh the shop list, and you'll see an icon for that detail."

So much simpler, and it's saved with your shop. Plus, if the idea suggested spawns a brainstorm, you can always edit the content.

I've pulled in a lot of content from a lot of places, expanding the DMG's limited selection to dozens of options for each of the four options.

Plus, as a bonus, Keepers get an ever-growing, expanded list of possibilities for each of the four options. This is our first custom content for Keepers, but it's a fun perk that'll keep on giving.

Other Stuff

There are some other things in this release, too, including a few bug fixes and a great suggestion from one of our newest Keepers: an option to turn off links on spellbooks to make it a little harder for your players to get around untranslated content. Fun times.

And that's not all. With just a few short weeks to wait until season 8 of a certain TV show arrives, I got an itch to put together a few new skins for Keepers to peruse. Access them under the "Account" section. I'm kinda fond of "Oncoming Winter" myself.
