It's been an incredibly hectic few weeks, and right in the middle of it, Unity, the great beast whose breath gives Rainshade life, announced some changes. These announcements traveled far and wide, and after a bit of a delay, it is time we joined hands with the others and sang, "what the @#$% is your problem!?"
It's an astonishingly dumb, greedy move, and even after walking things back a bit within hours, they're still proposing a terrible system that dramatically increases the chance of human error, with no attempt to explain how, in order to deliver something markedly worse.
Also, they're getting rid of Unity Plus! I use that! What the hell!!
In short, unless the changes are reversed and the ToS updated so they can't retroactively apply this later, we will be forced to move Rainshade to a new engine. We're a very small team, and nobody involved is full-time, myself included (as much as I'd love to), so this would take a lot of time and we'd be abandoning years of experience.
So, you know, we really would rather we don't have to.
Even in the short term, it's disheartening to try and work on something when there's a good chance you'll have to toss it all out if the conversion happens. So until it's clear what Unity's next move will be, focus will be shifted entirely to art assets, concept art, writing, anything that can be done outside of the engine, while we investigate and develop a plan regarding alternative engine. It'd probably be Godot (most similar to Unity) or Gamemaker (literally already use that for Deltarune), if you're curious.
I'm cautiously optimistic that things will be reversed, but until we know our next move these eggs are staying outta that basket and in my warm, cozy nest. In this, allegory, where I am a mama bird.
In the meantime, if you are STARVING for umbrella-type video game nourishment, Gunbrella is out! I really like what I played! Maybe you won't but that's not my problem!
AND AS ALWAYS, THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INSCRUTABLE PATIENCE
Not even minutes later update: Unity is signalling it might pull its head out of its ass. Let's hope they don't stuff it back in.
