Overanalyzing Netflix's Avatar: Episode 8 - Legends

If the outro feels short, man, there's just not a lot to say about this show.

Korra returns next video.

Overanalyzing Netflix's Avatar: Episode 8 - Legends

Comments

The thing that strikes me most about your commentary at the end of this video is just how incredibly disappointed you sound. I'm not going to lie, the first time I watched it, I was really excited for the show. The things you mentioned throughout this series got a pass from me because I was so happy to see it happen and so willing to give it a chance. Then I finished it, and I realized I really didn't want to watch it again. I did watch it again with a friend who didn't watch with me the first time, and that was when I truly realized, okay, the theme park ride is over, and honestly this show ain't good. There are good things about it, but really the only thing I look forward to seeing in the entire season is the story about Zuko and his crew in the 6th episode. Everything else, I just can't find it in myself to care about, and that really disappoints me too. I think after watching the live action version of One Piece I had a little extra faith that Netflix had assembled (or bought) a team that could pull it off. That show is really well done, well-written, the cartoonish action somehow really well placed in the live world. The director was such a huge fan of the original anime, and they let his vision shine. Here, Netflix fumbled and lost the literal original creators of the show, and it sounds like they didn't give it the budget it needed. This show feels like a cash grab. At best it's some kind of trial, made cheaply to gauge interest before they actually give it wings in seasons 2 or 3 but that's not enough. I'm curious about Toph, but otherwise I'm not really excited for those seasons anymore, and that sucks.

The Zuko and Katara fight annoys me in this version. Zuko has been training pretty much his entire life while Katara just started training now with no master, and yet she is equal in strength. and yeah the moon gives her the advantage but idk, in the cartoon it felt cool when we saw Katara actually being able to rival with Zuko. But in this version it just doesn't hit the same

I appreciate their attempt to do the whole monochromatic thing but in practice it all feels just badly balanced, like why didn't they actually set saturation to 0

Idk, I always thought Koizilla was a little silly. Like, its design was cool, but the way it moved was kinda hilarious.

Violet

it's incredible that even with the high-budget CGI, with the roar, with the scale, Netflix Koizilla is still less scary than the original. the original was terrifying. it was blood chilling. this version is just another monster. such lost potential. such a shame.

Never once could I just make my mind meld with this world and story. I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to do so, and how could I? I don't see these characters as characters, I see them as actors. I saw the sets as sets not locations, the choreography as choreography, not as fights. I never did that with the show, to me the world felt real, the characters were characters instead of their VAs, and the fights felt real and dangerous. That's the biggest failure of this show to me, it feels like I'm watching a show instead of experiencing a story. That's the biggest failure a story can do: remind me that it's a story.

It's just so lame that they decided to neuter the hard topics in this show (the sexism specifically) while at the same time girl bossifiying Katara to the point where we can't even get behind it; it' like they just wanted to have a girl boss character in the show but failed to actually make her go through any obstacles, it's whack but it does make me appreciate the cartoon even more for being so well written. Just gonna add a little note that after this video I watched some of my favorite moments from the cartoon and MAN is that show good, this fumbled live action remake makes me appreciate the cartoon so much more, and not just the writing but the look of the show too which is somehow more lifelike than the clips I have seen of this because it isn't just a greenscreen. Man, I love that cartoon and this channel really makes me appreciate it more.

You are so spot on to what I'm thinking when I was watching this series. Thank you for taking the time to finish this series before moving on!

With Xhao finding out about the Moon spirit from the fire sages and a random Wan Shi Tong in the spirit episode, I feel like they're trying to avoid having the whole Wan Shi Tong episode next season.

With this... unfortunate series behind us, I want to take a moment to say thanks. I know you started this channel because you love Avatar, and detailing why and how this adaptation falls so flat brought you no pleasure or joy. I appreciate the work you put into this series, and I hope there are brighter days ahead. (though from what I've heard of S2 of Korra... we may have a bit further to go.) That said, these are still Real Good videos, and you should be proud of the work you've put into them, even though I know it must have been joyless and exhausting. Thanks for everything man, and as always I'm looking forward to the next episode!

I'm honestly so happy you pointed out the roaring bit. When I first watched it I thought I was going crazy with how much it bothered me. Not only does it not feel like it should make sense for it to roar, it loses the immense awe Koi!Aang inspired in the original. This just felt like generic monster compared to that. The shots in the original mostly only have the music going on, to let us really take it in. Also, how would Aang possibly hear Katara at the end...

TimBTB

90% of this show was just someone standing in front of a green screen reading off a teleprompter

maskofthedragon

"Aang, Aang, you must go to the Dagobah System." Is all I could think during that Kuruk scene.

I like OA videos way more than the Netflix show. The more I watch NATLA the more I notice how bad it is. ATLA was completely the opposite. I don't know what they were trying to accomplish. It's not a one by one replica of the original but they completely rely on the viewers having watched the OG. They forcefully added scenes from ATLA but in the wrong place, completely missing the point and changing the meaning. Again, relying on fan service and nostalgia to carry the show. There's some level of arrogance to think they can just change the fundamental parts of ATLA and make it better. It's fine to deviate from the source material but do it purposely, not just switching some words and changing the order. Instead, it looks like they were copying a homework. I really tried to like the live action but it was just nostalgia doing the heavy lifting... Anyway, great video. Looking forward to OA Korra and I'm happy to have an excuse to rewatch LOK

Thanks I have only watched half as I got distracted

He said in the last 5 seconds that was the plan! (thank goodness)

Didn't even noticed that Yue shouldn't have been able to waterbend without the moon. I was just so checked out by that point. Also killing the ocean spirit equating to death of water tribe made no semse as an addition. The original explains the moon being connected to bending, but how is the ocean spirit connected to entire people's life force? What a nonsense addition that added nothing.

Andrew Wenger

I'll be honest, I only know one person who watched this show, and that person isn't me. I highly doubt that the next two seasons will have a budget equal to or better than this. Which just means more shoulder level shots of people talking and less action. I expected this show to be bad and I was still let down

Jordan Valentine

I want to be clear - love these videos I love that there's this hub for ppl to care about the show I care about. and I want to thank you for making these

CJ

I can't believe you didn't edit it so after Aang says "Zhao" he says "The Moon Slayer" for a third time

Thothrax

I’m surprised you didn’t mention that with Ozai’s big “comet prediction machine” almost definitely means they just accidentally stumble across the eclipse. Which will make it less impactful than the original to find out they knew about it because yeah they just have a fuck off massive solar system to play with for some reason.

Doomshire

You are correct, sir! Dang autocorrect

Matthew Lang

I think it's "jib".

Fuzzy

Honestly I'd pay good money for a montage of OA's patron shoutouts. Not a lot of money, but some, and it'd be good.

Justin Lapprich

This is unrelated to the episode itself, but the patron shout-out of "they went to University for sciences but was kicked out immediately cause no one could believe they're true calling wasn't modelling" is so good! Great work as always 😂

Aidan Fairfull

Oh thank god, a new episode of OA. Now I can go back to ignoring my real world problems for a bit longer. I like the cut of this guy's job.

Matthew Lang

Woo! Will Korra be back to being posted weekly? just wondering. Glad your done with this copyright nightmare
